Stars Cruise in Season Opener

River Forest, IL- The Dominican University women's soccer team traveled down Division Street to take on Concordia University Chicago on Wednesday afternoon, topping the Cougars 5-1.

The Stars got off to a hot start as Regan Coxon recorded the first goal of the match just 17 minutes in, with an assist from Hannah Anderson. Less than six minutes later Sophia Bartridge recorded her first collegiate goal, with an assist from Coxon. Halfway through the first half, the Cougars were able to connect on a goal of their own, which would make it 2-1 Dominican at the end of the first half.

Coming into the second half, the Stars kept their momentum as Coxon found the back of the net in the 48th minute, in the top right corner, to get her second goal of the contest. The Stars would continue to pressure the Cougars before an assist from Jolie Meyers would set up Bartridge to put the Stars ahead 4-1 with 14 minutes left to play. With less than a minute to play in the match, Sammy Hatfield and Daniela Tovar-Miranda were able to make a connection to set up Dana Steffen for a goal, to make the final score 5-1.

"Great overall team win today! I was very happy with our team performance as we were challenged with very windy conditions and handled it well," said Head Coach Carlos Carrillo. "For a team that hasn't played in over a year, we were good with our possession and ability to create opportunities. We scored some nice goals that came from possessing the ball."

The Stars put pressure on the Cougars offensively as they recorded 27 shots in the match with 19 of them being on goal. Dominican was also able to get 13 corner kicks compared to the Cougars one. Defensively, the Stars were able to hold their own as they only allowed three shot attempts during the match.

"Today we'll enjoy this win and tomorrow we'll recover and get back to work," continued Coach Carrillo.

The Stars return to action Sunday, March 14th for their home opener versus the Benedictine University Eagles at West Campus Field with a start time of 1:00 p.m.
