Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Coxon Records Five-Points in 6-1 Win

River Forest, IL - The Dominican University women's soccer team hosted the Benedictine University Eagles on Sunday afternoon, scoring twice in the first half before adding four more in the second as the Stars topped the Eagles 6-1.

The Eagles struck early as they were able to find the back of the net in the seventh minute of play to make it 1-0. The Stars were able to regroup as Leah Kostos found an open Regan Coxon upfield in the 19th minute to tie it up 1-1. The Stars would continue putting the pressure on the Eagles as they were able to get a corner kick opportunity in the 24th minute. Maggie McClure took the corner and served a perfect ball into the box as Gabby Green was able to get on the other end of it and put Dominican up 2-1 heading into the half.

The Stars kept the momentum heading into the second half as they got an early corner kick opportunity. Off the corner from McClure, Coxon was able to get a head-on it to extend the Stars lead to 3-1. Three minutes later in the 65th minute, Ashleigh Huerta carried the ball down the right side of the field before drilling one inside the opposite post to push Dominican's advantage to 4-1.

The Stars kept the pressure on as Kostos got a goal of her own with an assist from Coxon to make it 5-1. With 12 minutes left in the game, Sammy Hatfield found a crashing Dana Steffen to put Dominican on the board one more time as they won 6-1.

"We didn't have the start to the game we were looking for," said Head Coach Carlos Carrillo."We made the game difficult on ourselves by not playing simple and gave up an early goal. We came out with a lot of energy but we did not use that energy collectively as a group. A lot of individual play and no collective play."

Offensively, the Stars kept the pressure on the Eagles as they had 21 shots on the day with 12 being on frame. The Stars were able to execute on their 14 corners as they scored off of three of them. Defensively, Dominican only allowed the Eagles to take three shots on the day with two of them being on goal.

"Our second half was a completely different story, we had excitement and energy. We possessed the ball much better and our communication on the field was great. With that we were able to create good opportunities and because of that we scored some nice goals," continued Coach Carrillo. "I was very proud of our team and how we were able to recognize our mistakes in the first half, make the adjustments and play much better soccer in the second half.."

"Another great team win for this group. We'll look to continue to improve throughout the week and prepare for our next match," said Coach Carrillo.

The Stars return to action on Sunday, March 21st as they travel to Benedictine University to take on the Eagles at 4:00 p.m.
