#9 Stars Tame Falcons

Mequon, WI – The #9 Dominican University men's volleyball team pushed their win streak to five with a straight-sets win (25-20, 25-15, 25-21) over Concordia University Wisconsin on Friday night.

A Trey Cowan kill gave the Stars a slim advantage at 9-7 early in the first set before a finish from Jack McGuire doubled the margin to four at 16-12. The Falcons cut the deficit to three twice at 19-16 and 23-20 but a back-to-back kills by George Kougan and Troy Kates closed out the first set 25-20.

Daniel Sharrah set up Kougan for a 9-5 Dominican lead in the second set which doubled to eight, 15-7 after another kill from Cowan. The Falcons chipped away at the score, trimming the margin to six, 18-12, but the Stars won seven of the last 10 points to win the second set 25-15.

McGuire found Mat Molloy early in the third set to build some breathing room for Dominican at 10-6. Concordia Wisconsin cut the deficit to two, 15-13, before a Cowan kill halted the run. The Stars held a four-point lead at 19-15 but three straight errors pulled the Falcons to within one and forced a Dominican timeout. Kates and Cowan responded after the timeout with consecutive kills, 21-19, while Kougan joined the party to close in on finishing out the match at 23-19. McGuire would cap off the match with his fifth kill of the night from the setter position to give the Stars the set, 25-21, and the match three sets to none.

"It's always nice to come away from a conference road match with a 3-0 win," said Assistant Coach Doug Burchett. "We played some really solid ball at times tonight and showed our offensive talent with a .405 hitting percentage."

Cowan led the Stars attack with 14 kills at a .458 hitting percentage while Kougan and Kates added nine and eight respectively. McGuire orchestrated a Dominican offense that swung it at a .405 percentage with 33 assists. On the defensive end, Danny Pacini recorded eight digs while allow racked up four total blocks.

"Trey had one of his best all-around matches of the year for us," continued Coach Burchett.

The #9 Stars return home on Tuesday, March 16th when they welcome Marian to the Igini Sports Forum for a 7:00 p.m. first serve.
