Stars Win Game Two in Seventh over Eagles

Rosemont, IL – The Dominican University softball team took the field for the first time in 2021 and came away with a doubleheader split versus the Edgewood College Eagles dropping game one 5-4 before winning the nightcap 3-2.

The Eagles put up a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning as a leadoff walk was brought in via a triple before an RBI brought that runner across the plate as well.

Edgewood added on another run in the third but
Dominican would cross the plate in the fifth as Julia Orozco led off the inning by advancing to second after a throwing error by the Eagles' third basemen. With one out, Malia Gilles would plate Orozco with a single to left-center to cut the deficit to two at 3-1.

A leadoff walk would hurt the Stars again in the sixth as that runner came around to score as the Eagles plated two in the frame to open up some breathing room at 5-1.

Dominican would not go quietly in the seventh however as a leadoff walk by Olivia Johnson began the inning. After the next two batters were retired, Theresa Wilsterman drew a walk to extend the game. Megan McCamman made the Eagles pay for their transgressions as she launched a ball over the fence to send the Stars dugout into a frenzy as they trailed by just one at 5-4.

Unfortunately, the next Dominican batter grounded out to second to end the game with a 5-4 defeat.

"I feel like we had some first-game jitters," said Head Coach Cristina Lukas. "We settled down toward the end as I felt like a lot of our outs in the later innings were hard-hit ones. Megan came through with a huge three-run home run to give us a chance at the end. It was a game that could have gone either way but we had a few too many defensive miscues and it cost us in the end."

Megan Hufnagle paced the offense from the leadoff spot as she went 2-for-4 in game one with an RBI while McCamman hadded the three-run homer.

Game two had a similar feel in the early going as Edgewood pushed one across in the first inning but Dominican responded right away in the second. With two outs, Zoe Deeringer drew a walk which was quickly followed by a Johnson double down the left-field line that brought Deeringer around the bases to knot the score at 1-1.

Both teams had some opportunities to take the lead but the game headed to the seventh with the score remaining tied at 1-1. Makayla Barnes began the inning with an infield single to put the wheels in motion. Deeringer followed with another productive at-bat as she laid down a sacrifice bunt which allowed the speedy Barnes to advance to third as she beat the throw across the diamond. Johnson came up in another huge spot and delivered as her sacrifice fly to center plated Barnes from third.

The Stars were not done, however, as freshman Lexi Breceda followed with a sinking liner down the right-field line that the Eagles right fielder dove for unsuccessfully and after the ball got by her, Breceda scurried around the bases for an inside the park home run in her first collegiate game.

This time, Edgewood made it interesting in its last at-bats with two outs and a runner on first base. The Eagles next batter singled to deep right-center field to plate the runner from first as the Stars made the smart decision to hit the cutoff man and hold the tying run at first base. The next batter singled through the left side to make it first and second with two outs but a ground ball to short was scooped up by Breceda and she fired it across the diamond to finish off a 3-2 win for Dominican.

Freshman Molly Stuhr went the distance to pick up her first collegiate win, spreading out eight hits over seven innings but only allowing two earned runs due in part to walking none in the game.

"We played a strong second game," said Coach Lukas. We got a great pitching performance from Molly and gave her some good run support."

Johnson led the team with two hits in the nightcap as she went 2-for-2 with two RBIs.

The Stars have a quick turnaround as they will face the Eagles again tomorrow for their traditional NACC home doubleheader starting at 2:00 p.m.
