Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Stars Take Two From the Regents

Rockford, IL- The Dominican University women's volleyball team traveled to Rockford to take on the Regents in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. The Stars swept the Regents in six straight sets winning match one (25-19, 25-19, 25-22) before winning match two (25-13, 25-13, 25-22).

A Gabija Sinickaite kill gave the Stars a slim advantage at 8-6 early in the first set before a finish from Ola Magiera doubled the margin to four at 17-13. The Regents would keep the score close as they would come within two at 20-18 before back-to-back kills by Sinickaite and Gillian Jones closed out the first set 25-19.

Madi Palmer found Sinickaite to give the Stars an 11-9 lead to start the second set. The Stars and the Regents would go back and forth through most of the set before an error from the Regents would give the Stars some momentum. Dominican won eight of the last nine points to win the second set 25-19.

Madeline Morrow set up Magiera for a kill to give Dominican a big 17-10 lead in the third set. The Stars hit some adversity as the Regents were able to make a 7-0 run of their own late in the set. The Stars were able to regroup as Palmer found Sinickaite to end the first match 25-22.

Offensively, Gillian Jones, Sinickaite, and Mahoney each ended with nine kills on the match while Palmer dished out 19 assists. Defensively, Gillian Jones had 16 digs while Sofia Susa and Morrow had 11 and 10 respectively. Mahoney had four blocks while Haley Notzen and Sinickaite had two apiece.

Dominican kept its momentum from the first and took it right into the second match as they started hot in the first set. Morrow set up Emily Schellhase for a kill that gave the Stars an early 12-2 lead halfway through the set. The Stars would keep things going with a kill from Magiera to close out the set 25-13.

The Stars fell behind 8-4 early in the second set before a Sinickaite kill would bring the Stars alive. The Stars went on to win the next 12 points to take the lead 16-8. Dominican wouldn't let up as Morrow found Vicky Krzyszowski for a kill to finish the set 25-13.

Marrow set up Mahoney for an early 11-8 Dominican lead in the third set, before an ace from Schellhase would make it 19-16. The Regents cut the deficit to one, 23-22, before back-to-back kills by Magiera and Mahoney gave the Stars the set, 25-22, and the match three sets to none.

Offensively, the Stars had 48 kills on only nine errors while the Regents only had 21 kills and 11 errors on the match. Magiera lead the match with 14 kills while Schellhase had 10 and Sinickaite added nine kills. Morrow dished out 20 assists while Palmer had five aces. Defensively, Leah Robinson had 19 digs while Morrow and Hannah Hugunin each had six of their own.

"We executed the game plan pretty well today. In our second match we had 48 kills with only nine errors," said Assistant Coach Danielle Bielawski. "Our defense was really scrappy as well. We had 47 digs and passed at a .875 clip."

The Stars will return to action Sunday, March 14th as they host the Rockford University Regents in the Igini Sports Forum for a NACC doubleheader starting at 5:00 p.m.
