Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

Stars Slay Spartans in Straight Sets

River Forest, IL – The #6 Dominican University men's volleyball team rebounded from their first loss of the season last week as they made quick work of Aurora (25-21, 25-18, 25-15) on Tuesday night.

A George Kougan kill gave the Stars a 10-6 led in the opening set but the Spartans would stay within striking distance as an Adrian Cebula finish gave Dominican a slim advantage at 17-15. A kill by Troy Kates which was followed by a service ace from Trey Cowan pushed the margin to five, 20-15, as an Aurora service error ended the first set in the Stars' favor 25-21.

Jack McGuire set up Mat Molloy for a kill to give Dominican an 11-7 led early in the second set before back-to-back attack errors by Aurora extended the margin to six at 17-11. The Spartans would get no closer than five points as Bregin DeMarco found McGuire to make it 22-15 before three Aurora errors finished the set for a 25-18 Dominican win.

Kills from Kougan and Cowan helped the Stars jump out to a 9-2 led in the third set before another finish from Kougan stretched the margin to double-digits at 16-6. After a Spartans' timeout, the visitors would briefly halt the run with a pair of service aces but the Stars answered with a Molloy kill to put the pressure back on Aurora at 19-10. The Spartans trimmed the deficit to seven, 23-15, but it was too little too late as the Stars won the third set 25-15 to sweep the match in straight sets.

Kougan had a double-figure night, recording 13 kills on a .500 hitting percentage. Cebula added nine kills, three digs, and three blocks while McGuire racked up 26 assists to go along with four service aces. On the defensive end, Kates added three blocks and DeMarco picked up five digs.

"This was a great bounce-back win against a talented AU team," said Head Coach Cameron Andrew. "We knew we were going to be pushed early but we knew if we could settle into a rhythm, we were going to have opportunities to spread out the score."

To that point, the Stars swung it at a .296 hitting percentage in the first set before improving to .444 in each of the next two sets.

"I think we still have room to grow with our consistency as we are still leaving some points on the board," continued Coach Andrew. "The last two days we've been preaching to attack opportunities and take advantage of them and we did a much better job of that tonight."

#6 Dominican makes the short trip down Division Street on Friday, March 5th when it heads to Concordia Chicago for a 7:00 p.m. match.
