River Forest, IL – The Dominican University women's soccer team hosted the Aurora University Spartans on Wednesday afternoon, scoring twice in the first half before adding two more in the second half as the Stars defeated the Spartans 4-0.
The Stars put the pressure on Aurora early as
Maggie McClure and
Sophia Bartridge were able to connect before finding an open
Hannah Anderson who found the back of the net in the 6th minute to put Dominican up 1-0. The Stars would continue putting the pressure on the Spartans as they were able to get a corner kick opportunity in the 16th minute. McClure took the corner and served a perfect ball into the box as
Gabby Green was able to get a head on it and put the Stars up 2-0 heading into halftime.
Dominican kept its momentum going as
Leah Kostos and Bartridge teamed up to find a crashing Anderson in the 62nd minute to secure her second goal of the game and extending the Stars lead to 3-0. In the 83rd minute, McClure looked up field to find an open
Ashleigh Huerta who took a couple of touches before finding the back of the net to secure the 4-0 win for Dominican.
"I was very pleased with the way we came out today. We had a lot of energy and had a good start to the match," said Head Coach
Carlos Carrillo. "We battled windy conditions again but managed our play well."
Offensively, the Stars kept the pressure on the Spartans as they had 25 shots on the day with 18 being on frame. The Stars also had nine corner kick opportunities. Defensively, the Stars only allowed Aurora to take five shots on the day with three being on frame and only allowed one corner kick opportunity.
"We talked about getting on the scoreboard early and we did just that. We made some adjustments at the half and played a pretty complete match," continued Coach Carrillo. "I'm really proud of this group and the work they put in. We will be back to work on Friday to prepare for our next match."
The Stars will return to action Sunday, March 28th when they host Concordia University Chicago with a 1:00 p.m. kickoff at the West Campus Field.
