River Forest, IL – The Dominican University softball team made quick work of Alverno College on the road as they swept the Inferno 20-0 in game one before egding out a 13-6 win in game two.
Game One Recap:
The Stars' offense would get hot from the jump as they would combine for 5 runs off 5 hits. After an error by the Inferno brought in Megan Hufnagle, Mikayla Barnes would single up the middle to bring in the Stars' second run of the game. Theresa Wilsterman would get in on the action, as she would bring in Barnes off an RBI triple to right center to make it 3-0 Stars. Olivia Johnson would single to right center to score Wilsterman before a fielders' choice would plate Johnson to make in 5-0.
The second inning saw the Stars remain hot. Wilsterman would homer to left center and make it 7-0 Stars. Deeringer would tack on another run with an RBI single up the middle and make it 8-0.
Alverno would be unable to stop the damage, as the Stars would score 11 more runs off 11 more hits between the third and fourth inning to make it 16-0.
Dominican would finish it off in the fifth with an RBI walk credited to Hailey Morland and three more RBI singles off the bats of Megan McCamman, Erin Garman, and Malia Gilles to take game one 20-0.
Getting her second win of the season would be Allyson Dilday, pitching four scoreless innings giving up one hit and striking out seven.
Game Two Recap:
The Stars would complete the sweep in game two with a 13-6 win. The game would remain scoreless until the bottom of the second when Alverno's bats came to life. The Inferno would put up four runs off four hits to take the early lead 4-0.
Dominican would score off a wild pitch to trim in the third before an error in the fourth would trim the lead to just two.
Alverno would tack on another run in the fourth via an RBI single to make it 5-2.
The Stars' bats would finally get going in the fifth as Theresa Wilsterman would hit her second homer of the day to make it 6-5 in favor of the Stars. Zoe Deeringer would homer and bring in 3 in the same inning to make it 9-5 and give the Stars a padded lead going into the sixth.
Alverno would make it 9-6 as a solo homer would help keep the game close. Dominican would answer right back plating four more runs in the top of the sixth to make it 13-6 and that would be all the Stars needed to secure the victory.
Allyson Dilday would get her third win, second on the day, to help the Stars improve 5-3 overall.
Head Coach Cristina Lukas gave her thoughts on today's games. "The team came out hitting in game one and adjusted very quickly to Alverno's pitching." Lukas went on to say, "In game two we started out more slowly as we struggled to make early adjustments. After we settled down, we made some key late-inning adjsutments and produced a lot of runs because of it."
The Stars are back in action on Thursday as they travel to Marian for double header matchup with the Sabres. First pitch is set for 1:00pm in Fond Du Lac Wisconsin.
