Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Stars Win in Five Set Thriller

River Forest, IL – The Dominican University women's volleyball team squared off with #22 Aurora University on Sunday evening for a pair of matches pitting the two remaining undefeated teams in NACC play against each other.

The Spartans took the first match in four sets (25-21, 21-25, 25-18. 25-18).

Dominican ran out to a 10-0 lead in the first set but Aurora responded with an 18-8 run to knot the match up at 18 all. A Gillian Jones service ace put the Stars up 20-18 but Aurora rallied to take seven of the last 10 points to come back to win the opening set 25-21.

This time Aurora jumped out to an 11-4 advantage after a service ace before back-to-back kills from Emily Schellhase and Jones trimmed the deficit to one at 18-17. After Spartans' attack errors knotted the game at 20-20. A pair of kills from Jones and a Sarah Lychock service ace gave the Stars a 23-21 lead on their way to taking the second set 25-21.

A Spartans kill made it 15-10 in the third set and forced a Stars timeout that proved successful as a Jones kill cut the deficit to three, 19-16, and forced Aurora to use one of its timeouts. The visitors rattled off three straight points out of the break to take a 22-16 lead on their way to taking the third set 25-18 and leading the match two sets to one.

The fourth set was a similar story as the Spartans rushed out to a 13-6 differential to force a Stars timeout. Another Jones kill would keep the margin at seven, 22-15., but that's as close as Dominican would get, dropping the set 25-18 and the match 3-1.

Vicky Krzyszkowski led the offensive attack with 12 kills while Anastasia Labadessa had 22 assists. Lychock recorded a career-high 34 digs on the defensive end while Olivia Magnussen and Jones had three blocks each.

Dominican won the second match in a five-set thriller (25-23, 25-19, 23-25, 10-25, 15-9) after winning the first two sets of the match.

A Schellhase kill made it 10-5 in the opening set before Natalie Jones found Gillian Jones for a kill to push the margin to eight at 20-12. A run of four straight points pulled Aurora to within one at 23-22 but Gabija Sinickaite closed out the first set for Dominican 25-23.

A Magnussen kill gave the Stars a slim 12-11 lead in the second set that grew to 21-17 after a Spartans attack error. Dominican closed out the set with four consecutive points, capped off by a Natalie Jones kill to take set two 25-19 and a commanding two sets to none lead.

The Stars held a 22-19 advantage in the third set after a Krzyszkowski kill but the Spartans rallied to win six of the last seven points and stave off defeat with a 25-23 third set win.
Aurora rolled that momentum into the fourth set as it dominated Dominican 25-10.

The Stars responded in the fifth set with a kill from Ola Magiera to take a 7-4 lead. Another kill from Schellhase made it 12-8 before a Gillian Jones kill put Dominican two points away from victory. With the Stars holding a strong 14-9 lead, a Spartans attack error ended the set in Dominican's favor 15-9 and three sets to two.

"I'm really proud of our team's fight today," said Head Coach Cameron Andrew. "We really showed some heart and the ability to push through adversity."

Magiera paced the Dominican offense with 14 kills in the match while four Stars registered double-digit kills.

"Emily (Schellhase) was fantastic coming off the bench for us tonight (10 kills) and it's always fun to see a freshman burst onto the scene like that. Vicky (Krzyszkowski) continued to step up this year and expand her role and today was her most complete match."

"I also just want to shout out to our eight seniors in their final regular-season home matches today. They've given so much to the program and to get to walk off the floor with a win in the fifth set against Aurora is really an awesome moment for them. We came in together in 2017 and they really turned this program around and to this date have gone a combined 68-32! They have left such a lasting legacy on this program that is going to be here for a long time after they graduate!

Dominican heads down Division Street on Saturday, April 3rd for a NACC doubleheader against Concordia Chicago starting at 11:00 a.m.
