Stars Earn Pair of Hard Fought Wins on Road

River Forest, IL – The Dominican University women's volleyball team, which is receiving votes in the AVCA Top 25 Poll, picked up two more wins against Concordia Chicago on Saturday afternoon.

Dominican won the first match 27-25, 25-22, 25-17.

A Cougars service error gave the Stars an 11-10 lead in the first set but a run of 5-of-7 points gave Concordia Chicago a 20-16 advantage. Olivia Magnussen stopped the run with a kill before a Cougars attack error knotted the score back up at 23-23. Anastasia Labadessa found Ola Magiera to make it set point at 26-25 before another Cougars error closed out the first set 27-25 in the Stars favor.

Sarah Lychock set up Emily Schellhase to make it 10-9 Dominican early in the second set before a run of five straights points, capped off by a Gabija Sinickaite kill pushed the margin to four at 19-15. A block assist from Magnussen and Gillian Jones made it 23-19 before Sinickaite closed out the set with another kill at 25-22.

A Labadessa service ace helped the Stars jump out to a 13-8 advantage in the third set which grew to 21-12 after a G. Jones kill off the assist from Lychock. Natalie Jones found Schellhase to make it 24-14 Dominican and after a mini spurt from Concordia Chicago, the Stars closed out the set 25-17 thanks to a Vicky Krzyszkowski kill.

It was a diverse offensive attack as eight different players recorded kills for the Stars with none of them in double figures. Labadessa and Natalie Jones orchestrated the attack with 18 and 11 kills respectively while Lychock had 14 digs. Magnussen had four blocks in the middle for Dominican.

The Stars took match two in a closer affair 25-23, 11-25, 24-26, 25-18, 15-6.

A Schellhase kill helped the Stars run out to a 15-8 lead in the opening set but a 10-0 run by the Cougars found Dominican trailing by three, 18-15. Three consecutive points for the Stars kept them within one, 20-19, before another Schellhase kill gave Dominican a 24-22 lead on its way to taking the first set 25-23.

This time the Cougars raced out to a 15-7 lead as the Stars would only get as close as seven, 18-11, as Concordia Chicago ran away with the second set 25-11.

With the Cougars holding a slim 12-10 advantage in the third set, the Stars won four straight points, capped off by a Lychock service ace, to hold a 14-12 lead. Concordia Chicago came back to retake the lead 18-15 before Dominican tied the score back up at 18-18 on a Keely McCallum kill. The Cougars again held a narrow 22-20 lead before back-to-back service aces by Lychock pulled her team back ahead 23-22 but Concordia Chicago took four of the last five points to win the set 26-24 and hold a 2-1 match lead.

A pair of Cougars attack errors but the Stars up 13-12 in the fourth before kills from Sinickaite and Magiera extended the margin to four, 17-13. N. Jones set up Schellhase to hold the differential at five, 21-16 before Dominican closed out the set with three straight points to take it 25-18 and force a deciding fifth set.

Back-to-back Concordia Chicago attack errors helped Dominican secure an early 6-2 lead in the fifth set. A pair of Magiera service aces stretched the advantage to 12-4 as a McCallum kill made it 14-6 on the way to a 15-6 fifth set win for the Stars.

"I'm really proud of our team today," said Head Coach Cameron Andrew. "We had to battle to pull out two wins in someone else's gym and we got the job done."

Sinickaite paced the offense with 14 kills while Schellhase and Magiera had 13 and 10 kills respectively. Labadessa registered 25 assistswhile Lychock had six service aces. The libero got it done again on the defensive end with 23 digs while G. Jones had 15. Emily Mahoney added four blocks in the middle.

"We had some more individual struggles today than we've had in the last few weeks and we still found a way to grind through those struggles as a team," continued Coach Andrew. "Our right sides anchored us today as Emily (Schellhase) and Gabija (Sinickaite) did a great job of being consistent options for our setters in tough moments. Now we look to close out the regular season strong against Benedictine.

The Stars will look to do just that next Sunday, March 11th when they hit the road for a pair of matches starting at noon.
