Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Stars Take Two From Eagles

River Forest, IL- The Dominican University women's volleyball team won twice in a doubleheader against the Benedictine University Eagles on Sunday evening inside the Igini Sports Forum. The Stars started out the night by taking match one (25-23, 25-22, 25-15) before sweeping match two (25-15, 25-18, 25-21).

The Stars took an early 3-0 lead in the first set on a kill from Gillian Jones which was assisted by Anastasia Labadessa. Dominican then fell behind 15-12 before going on a 7-0 run to go ahead 19-15. The Eagles would cut the deficit to one before Sarah Lychock set up Gillian Jones for a kill to end the set 25-23.

An ace by Labadessa and a kill by Gabija Sinickaite would help the Stars jump out to a 16-11 lead halfway through the second set. The Eagles would fight back as they went on a run of their own cutting the Stars lead to just one at 23-22. Dominican ended up finishing the set with a Natalie Jones assist to set up Gillian Jones for a kill followed by an attacking error from the Eagles to take set two 25-22.

The Stars jumped ahead in the third set with a big block from Haley Notzen and Olivia Magnussen to make it 9-6. A couple of aces from Madeline Morrow would quickly push the Stars lead to 20-11 before a service error from Benedictine ended the match at 25-15.

Dominican struggled offensively in the first two sets, hitting only .182 percent but were able to regroup going into the third, where they hit .400 percent. Gillian Jones and Ola Magiera led the Stars with 11 kills each while Sinickaite added eight of her own. Defensively, Lychock led the match with 12 digs while Magnussen had three blocks.

Going into the second match the Stars were looking to carry over their momentum from the first one and they did just that as Natalie Jones set up Magiera for a kill to make it 13-5. The Eagles would trim the gap to six but couldn't hang on as the Stars took the opening set 25-15.

Natalie Jones set up Vicky Krzyszkowski for a kill to give Dominican an early lead in the second set 10-6. The Stars would continue putting the pressure on the Eagles and finish the set with a kill from Natalie Jones to win it 25-18.

Going into the final set of the night, Gillian Jones served an ace to open up a five-point lead at 15-10. The Eagles would fight back late to make it 20-19 just before the Stars went on a run to close in on match point at 24-20. A kill by Gillian Jones would end the match 25-21.

"What a great day for women's volleyball! It's always a positive to start out the season with a win but to go 2-0 without dropping a set to a solid Benedictine University team was great," stated Head Coach Cameron Andrew. "We just settled into a really nice groove after that first set of knocking off the rust. This team hadn't been on the court since November of 2019 and it was such a gift to compete with this squad again."

Offensively, Sinickaite led the Stars in the second match with nine kills, followed by Gillian Jones's seven, and Notzen's six. Labadessa helped orchestrate the offensive as she chipped in 15 assists. Defensively, Lychock recorded 16 digs while Magiera had two blocks.

"We did a fantastic job in the serve and pass game and that really allowed us to dictate the pace of play pretty much all night," continued Andrew. "We started to run out of steam in the last 10 points or so, but we did a great job buckling down and executing to that final point."

The Stars hit the road next Saturday, March 13th for a pair of non-conference matches against Rockford University with a  2:00 p.m. first serve
