Offense Explodes in Game Two Victory

Schaumburg, IL – The Dominican University baseball team welcomed Concordia University Chicago to Wintrust Field on Saturday afternoon, dropping game one 2-0 before erupting for 12 hits in a 13-5 win in the game two.

Game One:

The Cougars got on the board in the fourth via a sacrifice fly to left field to take a 1-0 lead before an RBI single to left made it 2-0 for the visitors in the sixth.

The Stars had a chance to cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the eighth as Tyler Trojan reached safely and advanced to second on a Cougars error to start the frame. A wild pitch advanced the Dominican shortstop 90 feet but a strikeout, short flyout, and groundout stranded Trojan at third base.

A two-out hit by Matthew Partridge kept hope alive in the bottom of the ninth but Concordia Chicago retired the next batter to close out the 2-0 win.

"We struggled yet again with manufacturing any offense," said Head Coach Steve Hardman. "Bryant (Bagshaw) threw about as well as you can and had nothing to show for it."

Bryant Bagshaw took the tough-luck loss as he threw nine innings of five-hit ball, striking out 10 while allowing just one free pass.

Game Two:

Dominican jumped on Concordia Chicago early in game two as a two-out, two-RBI double down the left line by Garrett Wano plated a pair.

In the third, a pair of walks by Keegan Brandt and Brandon Diedrich again set the table for Wano who once again doubled down the left-field line to make it a 4-0 Stars' advantage.

With runners on second and third and one out in the fourth, Diedrich joined in on the fun with an RBI double of his own to plate Trojan. Brandt stepped up next and smacked a double to left-center field that scored Zach Rigdon and Diedrich to extend the Dominican lead to 7-0.

The Cougars responded in the top of the fifth however as a two-out triple was brought home on a pinch-hit RBI single to get the visitors on the board at 7-1. The top of the order was up next and the Concordia Chicago leadoff hitter smacked a 2-run home run over the left-centerfield fence to put up a three-spot for the Cougars in the inning.

The Stars capitalized on an error in the bottom half of the inning as a misplayed sacrifice bunt eventually led to a Trojan RBI groundout to add one back at 8-3. Another error plagued the Cougars in the sixth and Partridge made them pay with an RBI single down the left-field line to bring another Dominican runner home.

Concordia Chicago looked like it had the makings of a big inning in the top of the seventh as four straight singles to start the frame trimmed the deficit to 9-4 with the bases loaded and nobody out. Hayden Young settled in however as he got the next batter to pop out to the catcher before inducing a 6-3 double play to escape the inning with just one run allowed.

Dominican got that run back in the bottom half as four straight two-out walks allowed Trojan to stroll all the way around the bases for a 10-4 advantage. After a Concordia Chicago pitching change, Wano added his fifth and sixth RBIs of the game with a single through the left side of the infield to plate Diedrich and Brandt. Partridge remained hot at the dish as he followed with another RBI single to stretch the margin to 13-4.

The Cougars added one more in the eighth but it was too little too late as the Stars controlled game two from the get-go, beating Concordia Chicago 13-5.

"We finally put together a complete game and showed what type of team we can be," commented Coach Hardman. "Hopefully this is the spark we need."

Young threw a complete game to pick up his second win of the season as he struck out five while walking zero.

Wano went a perfect 3-for-3 with a walk at the plate, knocking in a career-high six RBI while Trojan, Partridge, and Kevin Evans had two hits apiece in game two.

These two teams will be back at it on Sunday when Dominican makes the short trip down Division Street for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader.
