Stars Secure Top-Seed Heading into NACC Semifinals

River Forest, IL – The Dominican University men's soccer team closed out the regular season with a 1-1 tie against the Aurora University Spartans to secure the 1-seed heading into Thursday's semifinal.

After a scoreless first half, the Spartans struck first in the 54th minute as a cross from the lower left side of the box was finished into a wide-open net to give Aurora the 1-0 lead.

The Stars knotted the game at 1-1 in the 61st minute via a penalty kick after a Spartans foul inside the 18'. Vicente Castro took the kick and buried it inside the right post for his eighth goal of the season.

Dominican had corner kick opportunities in the 69th, 71st, and 81st minute but were unable to find the game-winner.

In the first overtime period, the Stars successfully defended three corner kick opportunities by the Spartans while an Elliot Allahverdy shot missed the frame wide to the right for Dominican.

The second overtime period saw each team battle to secure possession as neither one mustered a shot as the match finished in a 1-1 tie.

"Our compete level today was where it needs to be every time we step on the field," said Head Coach Erick Baumann. "We were able to grind out a result playing a man down for about 15 minutes of overtime. That showed great heart and character. We knew we needed a win or a tie and the guys got it done."

It was a hard-fought match as the teams combined for 32 fouls. The Stars held slight advantages in total shots (9-8) and corner kicks (8-5).

"It's always tough going into a big game like that being a little short-handed with some injuries. Martin Lamas did a great job keeping our team focused and ready to go," continued Coach Baumann. "We had a few players get some of their first minutes of the year and contribute to the result. It was a great team effort and we are going to need more of that in our semifinal on Thursday."

As the 1-seed, Dominican will host the 4-seed Concordia University of Chicago Cougars on Thursday, April 22nd at West Campus Field.
