Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

#5 Stars Advance to NACC Championship

River Forest, IL – The #5 Dominican University men's volleyball team cruised to a three-set win (25-17, 25-12, 25-14) over the Concordia University Wisconsin Falcons in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) Semifinal  match on Thursday evening.

The Stars came into the match as the 2-seed in the NACC Tournament and with the defeat of the 6-seeded Falcons advance to Saturday's NACC Championship at top seed and #6 Benedictine.

A Jack McGuire service ace put Dominican up 9-4 early in the opening set before an Adrian Cebula ace extended the advantage to seven, 16-9, and forced a Concordia Wisconsin timeout. Kills by Trey Cowan, Mat Molloy, and Cebula made it a 22-14 score to force the Falcons to burn their second timeout of the set. At that point, the momentum was in the Stars' favor as a Troy Kates kill and George Kougan service ace closed out a 25-17 first set win.

Another McGuire service ace helped Dominican jump out to a 10-5 lead in the second that quickly was pushed to 17-8 after a McGuire kill off the assist from Bregin DeMarco. After a Falcons timeout, a Concordia Wisconsin attack error stretched the margin to double digits, 20-10, before a Cowan kill capped off a 25-12 set two win.

Back-to-back kills by Kougan and Molloy propelled the Stars to a 10-4 advantage in the third set which jumped to 15-4 after another kill from Molloy. Kates held the lead at 11, 19-8, off a setup from McGuire before a Cowan service ace finished off a 25-14 third set win and the match sweep.

"Hats off to CUW for a great season as they upset the 3-seeded Raiders to make the semifinals," said Assistant Coach Doug Burchett. "Tonight was the complete match we've been looking for all season long from these guys and to save it for the NACC semifinal couldn't have been a better time."

It was a diverse offensive attack for the Stars as zero hitters recorded double-digit kills. Cowan led the attack with nine as Kougan and Cebula notched eight and six respectively.

"We were really impressive at the service line which got them out of system and dictated the flow of the game," continued Coach Burchett." To that point, Dominican registered 14 service aces with Kougan earning five himself.

"Our goal every year is to win a conference title so we will enjoy tonight but get back to work tomorrow to prepare for Saturday."

Dominican will look to avenge its only loss of the season on Saturday, April 10th when it travels to Benedictine for a 7:00 p.m. NACC Championship match. The Stars lost a five-set match to the Eagles back on February 25th.
