Rockford, IL – The Dominican University baseball team traveled to Rockford on Saturday afternoon hoping to improve their standing in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference. The Stars dropped game one 9-4 before blowing out the Regents 15-4 in just 8 innings.
Game One:
The Stars just couldn't get enough going offensively as
Bryant Bagshaw dealed seven innings of solid work fanning 13 while only allowing three runs.
After a three run first inning by the Regents, the Stars would get on the board in the second as
Ryan Simak would drive in
Matt Galdi off a RBI single.
Brandon Diedrich would get another run on the board in the third as a sac fly score
Kevin Evans. In the same inning, Galdi knotted things up at three a-piece and a double down the left field line to score
Grayson Downing.
Dominican would take the lead in the fourth as
Camron Stafford doubled to left center to score
Ryan Simak and make the score 4-3.
Rockford scored two in the fifth via a home run before tacking on one in the seventh to retake the lead 6-4. The Regents extended the lead in the 8
th putting up three more runs before closing the door on game one.
Game Two:
The Stars got plenty of revenge in game two. After Rockford put one up on the board first, the Stars responded in the 2
nd as a sac fly scored
Matt Galdi to even it up at 1-1.
In the third inning, Galdi would come up big and score
Tyler Trojan off an RBI single to take the lead 2-1.
After the Regents knotted in up in the bottom of the third, the Stars would start off the inning take advantage of a passed ball and retake the lead 3-2.
Garrett Wano would bring
Brandon Diedrich around to extend the lead 4-2 before a hitting barrage busted the game wide open. An RBI hit by both
Grayson Downing and
Nick Roeper would push the lead to 6-2.
Kevin Evans' sac fly would bring in Downing before
Ryan Simak scored off a wild pitch to give the Stars an 8-2 lead. The final run of the inning would come from two run double off the bat of
Zach Rigdon to put the Stars ahead 10-2.
In the sixth inning, the Stars would continue to pile it on as a two-run homer by Downing would stretch the lead 12-2.
Brandon Diedrich would score Trojan via a sacrifice fly to make it 13-2 in favor of the Stars.
The Regent would make it 13-4 in the seventh via a solo homerun and RBI single.
The 8
th inning saw the Stars tack two more from a bases loaded walk and a hit by pitch before closing out the victory in eight innings.
Hayden Young picked up his third victory of the season and pitched a complete game, fanning 9, while allowing only four runs to give the Stars bullpen a rest in game two.
"In game one we did not do ourselves any favors in the field and then could not execute when we needed it offensively", said Head Baseball Coach
Steve Hardman. "In game two I was happy to see our bats finally come alive and put up double digit runs. Young competed on the mound for us able to give our bullpen a break, which is huge going into another double-header tomorrow".
The Stars have a quick turnaround as they will face the Regents at Wintrust Field in a two-game set starting at 12:00pm.
