RIVER FOREST, Ill. – Dominican University's women's soccer program picked up Head Coach
Carlos Carrillo's 100th career win in style, defeating Illinois Tech 2-1 in its NACC Home Opener on Wednesday evening.
Both sides battled it out for much of the first half, but DU broke the deadlock with less than a minute to go in the first half.
Dana Steffen found herself all alone in the attacking third and curled a left-footed shot into the side netting to put Dominican ahead 1-0 at the break.
The Scarlet Hawks answered early in the second half, capitalizing on a Star miscue to level the score at 1-all. Just five minutes later, however, Dominican regained the lead after a bouncing corner kick inside the 18 found the feet of
Noelle Chong, who fired into the back of the net.
A massive turning point in the match occurred in the 71st minute when Illinois Tech was awarded a penalty. The Scarlet Hawk attacker stepped up and struck a solid penalty, but it was denied by
Ashley Ishman, saving the result for DU. Dominican's defense locked things up from there as the Stars finished off the match, winning 2-1.
The goals for Steffen and Chong were both their first of the 2021 campaign.
Hannah Anderson assisted on both goals while
Regan Coxon also picked up a helper.
DU plays again at home this week, taking on Lakeland College on Saturday, Sept. 18 at noon on West Campus Field to kick-off Homecoming Weekend. Live coverage will be available via dustars.com.
