GRINNELL, Iowa – Dominican University's women's volleyball team split its two matches, defeating Minnesota Morris 3-1 before falling to Simpson, to conclude its weekend at the Grinnell College Tournament on Saturday.
Minnesota Morris
DU won the first two sets by scores of 25-20 and 25-22, respectively, to put itself in the driver's seat for its first win of 2021. A tight third set went to Minnesota Morris, but Dominican then finished off the match 3-1, winning the final frame, 25-23.
Maya Green led the offensive effort with 11 kills while
Gabija Sinickaite joined Green in double-figures with 10.
Summer Smith added nine kills in her first significant action of the season.
Emily Schellhase had six aces to pace an aggressive serving Star team which totaled 16 aces in the match.
Sarah Lychock had a season-high 25 digs while Smith added 12 for a double-double.
Simpson
Dominican played its match with Simpson immediately following the win over Minnesota Morris and battled hard in the first two sets. DU was defeated in both sets one and two just four combined points, 28-26 and 25-23, respectively. The Storm used their momentum to finish off the match in straight sets.
Shellhase was the most productive Star offensively, finishing with 10 kills. Sinickaite added eight kills while Smith chipped in five.
Adeleen Dunker paced the offense with 12 assists and
Olivia Mendell had five assists and one service ace.
Dominican's next competition will be next Saturday, hosting its own triangular with Knox and North Park. Live coverage will be available on dustars.com.
