RIVER FOREST, Ill. – Dominican University's baseball team swept Monmouth College on Sunday by scores of 10-1 and 10-9, respectively, in non-conference play.
Game One
Hayden Young (3-0) pitched a gem, striking out six and surrendering just one earned run in 7.2 innings on the bump.
Carson Harvey and
Dalton Rogers pitched 1.1 scoreless to finish off the convincing victory for DU in the lid-lifter of the twin-bill.
The Stars scored nine runs in their first three innings to provide Young a sizeable lead.
Jake Polonus led the offensive effort with two RBI, adding a walk and a run scored.
Brandon Diedrich,
Grayson Downing and
Dominic Desch all had multi-hit performances. In total, DU had seven different players record at least one RBI.
Game Two
The second game of the day saw Dominican build another big lead early as the Stars raced out to an 8-1 lead after 3.0 innings. Monmouth chipped away, however, scoring six runs in the final two innings, but it was not enough as DU finished off a 10-9 win to sweep the series.
Diedrich led the offense with a three-run homer in the first. Downing picked up two more hits and scored twice from the lead-off spot. Polonus, Desch and
Austin Doty all had multiple hits in the second game of the day.
DU will host its first home games of the season at WinTrust Park in Schaumburg, Ill. on Sunday, March 27, taking on Carroll University for a 1 p.m. doubleheader. Live coverage will be available via dustars.com.
