Baseball Sweeps Elms to Begin Florida Trip

RIVER FOREST, Ill. – Dominican University's baseball team swept Elms College in a doubleheader to start off its Florida Spring Break trip on a positive note.

Game One

Trailing 1-0 after two innings, DU wasted little time in erasing that deficit with a five-run third inning to pull ahead. The Stars continued to tack it on as the game progressed, scoring a total of 12 runs on 16 hits and cruising to a 12-4 win.

Hayden Young (1-0) earned his first victory of the season, pitching 6.0 innings and striking out six with four earned runs. Garrett Wano led the offensive effort, going 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Wano and Dominic Desch both homered in the game, DU's first two homers of the season. Matt Galdi, Austin Doty, Grayson Downing and Desch all joined Wano with multi-hit games.

Game Two

The second game of the doubleheader saw Elms in control for 4.5 innings with the opponents out in front 4-0. DU responded in the bottom of the fifth with eight runs in the frame to regain momentum, taking that 8-4 advantage to the finish line.

Tyler Kara (1-0) earned the victory, pitching three scoreless innings to maintain DU's advantage. Wano knocked out two more hits and had three RBI, bringing his total to 12 in just five games. Downing also had another two hits while Zach Rigdon, Brandon Diedrich and Desch had one hit a piece.

DU takes on Trine in a single game tomorrow, Monday, March 7 at 3:30 p.m. Links to live stats are available via dustars.com.
