Baseball Uses Late-Inning Heroics to Sweep Lakeland

RIVER FOREST, Ill. – Dominican University's baseball program secured two late-inning victories in a sweep of Lakeland University on Tuesday evening.

DU hosted the Muskies as the road team due to field conditions at LU, winning game one 3-2 before a 7-2 win in the second game.

Game One
Dominican trailed 2-0 after four innings, but managed to tie the score at 2-all in the top of the sixth, setting the stage for a dramatic finish. In DU's half of the ninth, Seth Hoffman doubled to lead off the inning and came around to score the eventual game-winning run on a wild pitch. Dominic Desch shut the door in the bottom half to pick his fifth save in as many chances.

Tyler Ferraro (2-0) earned the win in relief, pitching 2.0 scoreless innings. Grayson Downing, Matt Galdi, CJ Kalekas, Austin Doty and Hoffman accounted for the Stars' five hits.

Game Two
DU again trailed early in the nightcap, down 2-0 after one. Dominican pushed one across to halve its deficit in the third, but again showed its flair for the ninth inning with six ninth-inning runs to secure the sweep. Matthew Hannafin (1-1) earned the win in relif, pitching 4.0 scoreless innings while striking out five.

Garret Wano provided a three-RBI double in the ninth to give the Stars a comfortable five-run cushion. Desch's sacrifice fly put Dominican ahead after a Kalekas RBI single scored Hoffman. Hoffman picked up two hits in game two. Galdi had the other two RBI for the Stars.

Dominican hosts IIT on Saturday, April 23 at noon for a conference doubleheader. Live coverage will be available via dustars.com.
