RIVER FOREST, Ill. – Dominican University's baseball program split its Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) doubleheader with Concordia University Chicago on Saturday.
DU fell in a close 3-1 contest in 10 innings in the opener, but secured a 6-1 win to salvage a split and keep its conference tournament hopes alive. Dominican is now 20-16 overall and 11-11 in NACC play.
Game One
Hayden Young started for Dominican and allowed just one run over 7.0 innings of work, striking out two and scattering seven hits. DU trailed for much of this pitcher's duel 1-0, but evened the score at 1-all with two outs in the ninth to send it to extra innings. Two CUC runs in the top of the 10th were ultimately the difference as the Stars were held scoreless in their final at-bat.
Matthew Hannafin (1-2) suffered the defeat, allowing two earned runs in the 10th.
CJ Kalekas led the offensive effort with three hits.
Dominic Desch provided the game-tying RBI single in the ninth.
Braiden Galvin had the other hit for Dominican.
Game Two
Tyler Ferraro (4-1) delivered a masterful performance on the bump to lead DU to a game two win, pitching a complete game with seven strikeouts and allowing just two hits and one earned run.
Offensively, DU did all of its damage in the bottom of the fourth, pushing six runs across in the frame. With that lead in hand and Ferraro's pitching, the Stars cruised to a five-run victory.
Seven different DU players accounted for the team's nine hits.
Zach Rigdon,
Austin Doty, Kalekas and Desch each knocked in one run. Rigdon and
Matt Galdi had two hits to lead the offensive effort.
