Stars Bounce Back and Sweep Spartans

Rosemont, Ill. – The Dominican University softball was back in action after suffering their first loss in conference play. The Stars hosted the Spartans of Aurora University for a double-header looking to bounce back.
 
Game 1 Results:
Dominican: 9
Aurora: 1
 
How it Happened:
-DU got off to a fast start scoring 5 runs in the bottom of the first inning.
-The Scoring got going with Senior Geneva Pollman laying down a squeeze, and Senior Kayla Faber-Cournane scoring. Sophomore Ryley Davis followed it up putting a fly ball to right field that was dropped, scoring a run. Pollman scored on a wild pitch shortly after. Freshman Kailee Diaz Randall continued the scoring for the Stars with a RBI single to left field. Freshman Liberty Rivard drove in the final run of the inning on a single to center field.
-Aurora answered back in the top of the second scoring a run on three hits.
-Dominican answered in the third with another big inning, putting up 3 runs in the bottom of the 3rd.
-Stars got going with Junior Lili Santoyo hitting an RBI single to left field. Junior Hanna Voegtle followed it up with an RBI single of her own, this to center field. With this hit DU was able to turn the lineup over and Faber-Cournane brought in Voegtle on a single to right.
-Dominican got the run they needed to slaughter in the bottom of the fifth. With Junior Donatela Sommesi hitting a double to right field.  
 
Shining Stars:
-Senior Kayla Faber-Cournane started in the circle for the Stars and was dominate. Faber-Cournane threw 5 innings only allowing a run on three hits. Faber-Cournane also collected 2 strikeouts.  Kayla also provided some offense for herself going 2 for 3 with a walk, an RBI, and a run scored.
-Junior Donatela Sommesi went 2 for 3 with a walk an RBI, and a run scored. Including the game winning in the bottom of the 5th.  
-Senior Geneva Pollman went 1 for 2 with an RBI and a run scored.  
-Junior Lili Santoyo went 2 for 3 with a RBI and a run scored.

Game 2 Results:
Dominican: 4
Aurora: 3
Final in 9 innings.
 
How it Happened:
-Aurora was the team that started fast in the second game scoring 2 runs on a hit.  
-DU was able to answer back right away scoring on a sacrifice fly by Sophomore Paytin Salfi.
-Junior Hanna Voegtle tied the game up at in the bottom of the second, hitting an inside the park homerun.  
-The game remained tied at two until the 6th inning when the Spartans scratched a run on two hits.
-Dominican threaten to score a run in the bottom of the 6th, but was unable to get a run across home.
-The Stars did not want to split two series in a row, and tied it up on the bottom of the 7th. Junior Donatela Sommesi hit a triple, and then scored on a wild pitch. DU was not able to get the winning run across the board.
-Both Dominican and Aurora brought three batters up to the plate, with AU getting back-picked on a sacrifice bunt.
-In the 9th inning the Stars left the Spartans scoreless, and DU had the top of the lineup on its way in the bottom half.
-Senior Kayla Faber-Cournane started off the inning legging out a double on a ball that bounced in front of the center fielder. Sommesi put down a fantastic sacrifice bunt that moved Faber-Cournane over to third.
-The game winning hit was delivered by the Senior Geneva Pollman on a RBI single to right field.
 
Shining Stars:
-Senior Geneva Pollman went 2 for 5 with the game winning RBI.
-Senior Kayla Faber-Cournane went 2 for 4 with a walk, and 2 runs scored. Faber-Cournane also pitched in relief in the second game. Faber-Cournane threw 9 innings only gave up one run on 7 hits.
-Junior Donatela Sommesi went 2 for 4 with a run scored.
-Junior Lili Santoyo went 2 for 4.
-Junior Hanna Voegtle went 1 for 3 with a RBI and a run scored.

Dominican's starting pitcher Kayla Faber-Cournane was brilliant all day in the circle. Throwing 14 innings and only gave up 2 runs on 10 hits. Faber-Cournane collected 4 strikeouts in both games.  

What's Next:
The Dominican University softball team will have a deserved week off, after playing three series this past week. The Stars will host the Warriors on April 20th for a doubleheader. First pitch will be at 12:00 p.m.
