Stars Win Their First Game of the Season

Jacksonville, Ill. – The Dominican University women's volleyball team played Blackburn College in the third and final game of the Illinois College Invitational on Saturday afternoon.

How it Happened:
-Dominican started off strong by winning the first set to the score of 25-18. The Stars picked up 9 kills in the set on 36 attacks.
-DU got help from everyone on the court to win this set. Getting points from Senior Mia Febles, Senior Melissa Schmidt, Sophomore Kathryn Ksieszak, and many more.
-Blackburn bounced back winning the next two sets to the scores of 25-22, and 25-20.
-It was then Dominican's turn to make a comeback in the match, and the Stars answered the phone by winning the 4th set to the score of 25-23.  
-DU had 10 kills in the set. 4 of the Kills came from Senior Tanya De La Riva.
-In the fifth and final set of the match the Stars put up a season high of kills with 11. Lifting Dominican to their first win of the season.
-In the final set it was all hands-on deck for DU to earn the victory. Junior Emma Mendell, Febles, De La Riva Senior Ellery Shea all nodded kills in big time spots. E.Mendell earning the game winning kill.

Shining Stars:
-Senior Tanya De La Riva led the Stars in kills with 13 of them, De La Riva also collected 8 digs.
-Junior Ellery Shea added 8 kills of her own, a block, and 4 digs.
-Junior Emma Mendell earned 8 kills in the match.
-Sophomore Kathryn Ksiezak collected 8 kills, an assist and 7 digs in the match.
-Senior Adeleen Dunker had 15 assists, 6 service aces, a block, and 11 digs.
- Senior Melissa Schmidt added 4 service aces.

What's Next:
The Dominican University women's volleyball team wrapped up their weekend in Jacksonville, Ill. Going 1-2. The Stars will compete in the St. Norbert College Tournament starting September 6th. The Stars will play the Green Knights in the opening game of the tournament starting at 3:00 p.m. on September 6th and will immediately play University Wisconsin-Stout at 5:30 p.m.
