Schaumburg, Ill. – The Dominican University Baseball team hosted the Spartans of Aurora University on Wednesday afternoon.
Game 1 Results:
Aurora: 11
Dominican: 10
How it Happened:
-Aurora jumped up early scoring 2 runs on 4 hits in the top of the first inning.
-AU added another run in the second on two hits.
-The Spartans made it 4-0, scoring a run on three hits in the third.
-Dominican exploded in their half of the third inning scoring 6 runs on 6 hits and taking advantage of 2 Aurora errors.
-Sophomore
Ty Phillips brought home the first run of the inning on a fielder's choice to second base that scored Senior
Braiden Galvin. Junior
Zach Helein followed suit with an RBI single, scoring Senior
Gavin Zappe. Junior
Niko Krecu tied the ball game up at 4 with a 2 RBI double to left field that brought home Helein and Phillips. The Stars were not done yet with Senior
Quinton Schwartz hitting a single that scored Krecu on an error by the left fielder. The final run of the inning was off the bat of Junior
Tyler Johnson on an RBI double, bringing home Schwartz.
-Helein added an RBI single to center field that scored Zappe in the bottom of the fourth inning.
-AU brought the score to 7-6 in favor of DU, scoring 2 runs on 3 hits in the 5
th.
-Dominican got those two runs right back with Zappe hitting an RBI double to right field that scored Krecu. Senior
CJ Kalekas followed suit with an RBI single to right that brought home Galvin.
-The score remained 9-6 until the top of the 9
th inning where the Spartans found lightning in a bottle scoring 5 runs on 4 hits and taking advantage of 2 DU errors.
-The Stars did not go down without a fight though, with Senior
Ryan Schmidt hitting a pinch-hit RBI double scoring Schwartz. Schmidt found himself just 90 feet away after Galvin sacrifice bunt, but this is as far as Schmidt would make it.
Shining Stars:
-Senior
Gavin Zappe swung a hot bat going 3-4 with a walk, 2 Runs scored, an RBI, and a double.
-Senior Quinton Schwarz went 3-5 with 2 runs scored, an RBI and a triple.
-Junior
Niko Krecu continued to swing it well in the cleanup spot going 2-5 with 2 RBIs, 2 Runs scored, and a double.
-Junior
Zach Helein went 2-5 with 2 RBIs, a run scored, and a stolen base.
-Senior
CJ Kalekas has continued to find his bat going 2-4 with an RBI.
-Junior
Tyler Johnson found himself back in the lineup today and did not disappoint going 1-3 with an RBI, a double, and a hit-by-pitch.
-Senior
Ryan Schmidt went 1-1 with an RBI, and double in his pinch-hit at-bat.
-Graduate Student
Chris Kendziora came in relief for DU and threw 4 scoreless innings and only gave up 1 hit in his four innings.

How it Happened:
-Once again the Spartans jumped up early scoring 4 runs on 4 hits in the top of the first.
-The Stars answered back quickly with Senior
Quinton Schwartz getting the first run on an error by the shortstop that scored Sophomore
Ty Phillips. Senior
Braiden Galvin brought home the next two runs with a 2 RBI double to left field that brought home Junior's
Zach Helein and
Niko Krecu.
-Aurora responded to the three Dominican runs by scoring 4 runs on 5 hits in the second, this making the score 8-3.
-AU scored in the first three innings for the second straight game, by scoring a run on two hits in the third.
-The Spartans continued to roll in the fourth scoring a run on no hits in the fourth.
-Dominican cut the deficit in half in their half of the fourth inning, with Senior
Ryan Schmidt hitting a solo homerun to left field. Senior
CJ Kalekas than scored on a wild pitch later in the inning.
-Aurora once again responded right away scoring 4 runs on a hit in the fifth.
-In the seventh inning Senior
AJ Davies got himself an at-bat and hit an RBI single to left field that scored Helein.
-The Spartans kept the trend going though, scoring a run on a hit in the top of the 8
th, this making the score 15-6.
Shining Stars:
-Senior
Ryan Schmidt swung a hot bat going 2-4 with an RBI, a run scored, a double and solo-homerun.
-Junior
Zach Helein went 2-5 with 2 runs scored.
- Senior Braiden Glavin went 1-4 with 2 RBIs and a double.

What's Next:
Dominican University Baseball falls to 14-18 overall, 6-12 in the conference and 6-5 at Wintrust Field. The Stars will not have to sit on today long as they are back in action tomorrow evening with a non-conference game against Elmhurst University at 5:00 p.m. at Wintrust Field.
