Dominican Wins Shootout Against Non-Conference Opponent

Schaumburg, Ill. – Dominican University Baseball hosted the Bluejays of Elmhurst University to end a 6-game homestand.
 
Results:
Dominican: 11
Elmhurst: 10

How it Happened:
-Elmhurst scored in the top of the first inning on a run and a hit.
-Dominican got on the scoreboard in the third inning with Junior Matthew Earley reaching on an error by the shortstop and Senior Braiden Galvin coming around to score. Later in the inning, Senior Gavin Zappe hit an RBI single to center field that brought home Junior Zach Helein.
-The Stars extended that lead in the fourth inning. Earley drew a bases-loaded walk and scored Senior AJ Davies. Junior Niko Krecu singled to right field and scored Galvin. Senior Michael Christopher hit a sharp grounder to first base but brought home Helein, and Zappe brought the final run of the inning home on a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Earley.
-DU led 6-1 going into the 5th.
-The Bluejays were scrappy and tied up the ball game in the 6th scoring 5 runs on a hit, and took advantage of 4 Dominican errors.
-The sloppy sixth inning continued with DU scoring 4 runs on 2 hits, and taking advantage of 2 Elmhurst errors.
-Earley once again reached on an error by the shortstop that scored Galvin for the first run of the inning. Krecu was the next batter and he reached on an error by the second basemen, which scored Helein. A couple of batters later Senior CJ Kalekas had the only RBI hit of the inning with a 2 RBI double off the wall in left field scoring Earley, and Krecu.
-The Bluejays responded in the 7th inning by scoring 3 runs on 2 hits in the inning.
-Senior Ryan Schmidt added an insurance run in the DU half of the 7th inning with an RBI single to center field that brought around Helein.
-Elmhurst once again responded right away scoring a run in the 8th on two hits.
-The score was 11-10 in favor of Dominican going into the top of the 9th, when Senior Rocco Chiarito went 1-2-3 in the inning to give DU the win.
-This game saw 21 total runs on 17 hits, 8 combined errors, 22 combined walks, and 3 combined hit-by-pitches.

Shining Stars:
-Junior Zach Helein led the Stars with 2 hits going 2-2 with 3 walks, 4 runs scored, and 2 stolen bases.
-Senior CJ Kalekas went 1-4 with 2 RBIs, a walk, and a double.
-Senior Gavin Zappe went 1-2 with 2 RBIs
-Senior Ryan Schmidt came in halfway through the game and went 1-1 with a walk and an RBI.
-Junior Matthew Earley went 1-4 with a walk, an RBI, and 2 runs scored.
-Junior Niko Krecu went 1-3 with 2 walks, an RBI, and a run scored.
-Sophomore Casey Myczek notched his second start of the season and earned the win by going 4 innings only allowing one run and collecting 4 strikeouts.
-Junior Michael Del Genio came in relief and went 1.1 innings and added 4 strikeouts to his name.
-Senior Rocco Chiarito closed the game out with a three-up three-down inning in the 9th.

What's Next:
Dominican University Baseball improves to 15-18 overall on the season 7-5 at Wintrust Field and 9-6 in their non-conference games this season. The Stars will head to Madison, Wis. for a conference doubleheader against the Eagles of Edgewood College Saturday afternoon! The first pitch is set for 12:00 p.m.
