Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Late Winner Propels Stars Past Marian on Homecoming

River Forest, Ill. – Dominican University Men's Soccer returned to West Campus Field to face Marian University for Homecoming on Saturday.


Results:
Dominican: 2
Marian: 1

  How it Happened:
-Freshman Enzo Cinque recorded the first shot on target for DU in the 14th minute.
-In the 42nd minute, Sophomore Travis Fowler had a shot sail over the crossbar.
-Dominican and Marian could not be separated in the first half and went into halftime tied 0-0.
-Marian opened the scoring in the 51st minute and took a 1-0 lead.
-In the 54th minute, the Stars earned a penalty after some nice build-up play into the box. Senior Ryan Gutierrez stepped up and calmly slotted home the equalizer.
-Junior Brenton DuBoise had a golden opportunity in front of the goal and was denied by the Sabre keeper in the 73rd minute, keeping the score knotted at 1-1.
-In the 82nd minute, a blistering run down the right wing by Junior Tristan Manuel made space for the pass, as Sophomore Jonathan Almaguer pounced on the cross and broke the deadlock, giving DU a 2-1 lead.  
-Dominican clung on to the 2-1 advantage to win their first game of the season.
-The Stars and Sabres combined for 4 yellow cards and 37 fouls in a feisty affair.  

  Shining Stars:
-Sophomore Jonathan Almaguer slotted home his first of the season in what proved to be the game-winner for the Stars.
-Senior Ryan Gutierrez scored from the penalty spot and logged 83 minutes.  
-Junior Tristan Manuel and Junior Nicholas Porada bagged assists on the Almaguer goal. Porada also fired three shots in the win.
-Senior Brendan Gavin took home Player of the Game honors for his stout work in the defensive midfield role.

  What's Next:
Dominican University Men's Soccer improves to 1-4-2 on the season. The Stars will be back in action on Wednesday, September 24th against Rockford University. Kick-off at West Campus Field is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
