Saunders Ignites Stars to Win over Regents

River Forest, Ill. – The Dominican University Women's Basketball team returned to the Igini Sports Forum Wednesday night.
 
 Results: 
Dominican: 69 
Rockford: 44
 
 How it Happened: 
-Junior Kaitlyn Milison got the Stars rolling with three a minute into the game, giving DU a 3-2 lead, and they never looked back from there.
-Dominican went on a 16-0 run in the middle part of the first quarter with everyone getting involved. Junior Lia Saunders, Junior Teagan Dahl, Freshman Kennedy Yost, Freshman Eva Herbig, and Milison all scored on this DU run.
-Saunders had 9 points at the end of the quarter and ensured a 22-6 lead after the first 10 minutes of play.
-Saunders started exactly where she left off, scoring the first 10 points for the Stars in the second and pushing the lead to 32-11.
-Herbig and Yost added a three and a layup in the quarter.
-Dominican went into the break with a 37-11 lead and held the Regents to 28% shooting from the floor in the first twenty minutes of play.
-Saunders went into the half with 19 points on 8-11 shooting.
-Yost got DU started in the third with two free throws.
-Saunders followed it up with 2 threes for Dominican, keeping their lead at 26 points.
-The Regents went on a run to end the third quarter, getting the DU lead down to 21 going into the final quarter. Rockford outscored the Stars 18-13 in the third.
-Saunders finished the third quarter with 25 points on 10-13 shooting.
-The Regents run pushed on to the fourth quarter, cutting the lead to 17 until Milison stopped the momentum by converting an and-one opportunity.
-Dominican got the lead back up to 24 points with Freshman Jaylani Hernandez converting an and-one and Senior Kamila Gajkowska hitting a three.
-Saunders notched the final bucket of the game for the Stars, a three to make the score 69-44.
-Junior Lia Saunders put her name in the Dominican University Women's Basketball record book with a 30-point performance that puts her tied for 8th in single-game points. Saunders did not miss a shot in the second half, going 4-4 from the floor.
-Dominican recorded 27 points off turnovers and 18 bench points.
  
 Shining Stars: 
-Junior Lia Saunders earned herself Star of the Game with a 30-point performance. The Junior shot 12-15 from the floor and 6-9 from downtown. Saunders also recorded 4 assists and 2 steals.
-Junior Kaitlyn Milison collected 10 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 steals
-Freshman Eva Herbig added 9 points.
-Freshman Kennedy Yost went 4-4 from the charity stripe and collected 6 points in the game.

 What's Next: 
 Dominican University Women's Basketball moves to 8-7 on the 2025-2026 season and is 2-5 in NACC play. The Stars will be back in the Igini Sports Forum Saturday afternoon, as they welcome in St. Norbert College for a 1:00 p.m. tip-off on Alumni Day.
