Men's soccer and sports information will be taking advantage of the off-season months to catch up with some of our men's soccer alum to reflect on their experience at Dominican University (or Rosary College). Today we catch up with Garrett Boston from the class of 2022.
What have you been up to since graduating from Dominican?
Since graduating from Dominican, I worked at Myriad Genetics, conducting oncology research and performing genetic testing. While working for Myriad, I've always been fascinated by a career in the medical field and became interested in Pharmacy. Therefore, I began applying to several pharmacy schools to become a Pharmacist. I'm currently in my second year of Pharmacy school at the University of Utah, completing my Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD). While immersing myself in the world of Pharmacy, I've been able to witness different areas of Pharmacy, including community, hospital, inpatient, emergency department, and specialized settings. I currently work for CVS Pharmacy as a pharmacy intern and serve the Davis County community.
What do you miss most about Dominican?
The biggest thing I miss about Dominican is the family-like atmosphere the program fostered. When things at Dominican got rough, my teammates and coaches were always there to support me and help me grow into a mature man. I miss just being around my teammates and always creating memories of winning NACC championships and getting into the NCAA Tournament. Coach Baumann always said, "Enjoy Disneyland while you can," and he was right when he told us that our time as a student-athlete at Dominican is like going to Disneyland.
What was your most memorable moment while at Dominican?
From my time at Dominican, I have several memorable moments; however, two stand out as the most important to me. The first was my last NACC Tournament Championship game in 2021 against St. Norbert. Playing at St. Norbert in the final was a challenge, but we ended up on top and had a great celebration after we won the penalty kick shoot-out. The last moment was the NACC Tournament Championship in 2019 against Benedictine, resulting in a 6-0 home win. I remember all the goals, the packed stands, and the energy. In that game, I started and played almost the whole game. With about 10 minutes left, I was fouled and was told by Coach Baumann to stay down to get a sub. While our trainer came to check on me, Coach Baumann came all the way across the field to make sure I was not hurt. As we were walking off the field, Coach Baumann saw me smiling and asked, "Why are you smiling?" My response was, "That was my first collegiate championship, Coach." He responded, "It's not going to be your last either," and hugged me. This was a moment that I will never forget.
What advice would you give to an incoming player?
My most significant piece of advice to any incoming player at Dominican is to never shy away from challenges; instead, accept them. Always ask for feedback, as that is the only way to become a better player and student of the game. Another piece of advice is "Being Comfortable Being Uncomfortable." There will be many uncomfortable moments throughout any player's playing career; however, the more comfortable you become in these moments, the more success you will have. This program is about winning championships and being the best player you can be; however, it's more about the maturity you'll gain to be ready for your life after Dominican.
