Stars Cap Perfect Weekend with a Win Over #13 Centre College

Danville, Ken. – Dominican University Baseball was back in action, after winning their first game of the season on Saturday. The Stars were ready to carry that momentum into Sunday.
 
Results:
Dominican: 14
Brevard: 4

How it Happened:
-The Stars opened the game up with two runs in the top of the first inning. Senior Niko Krecu grounded out to the shortstop, who scored Senior Zach Helein. Senior Tyler Johnson followed it up with a double to right-center field, scoring Senior Matthew Earley.  
-Brevard got a run back in the bottom of the first inning, by scoring a run on a hit.
-The score held at 2-1 in favor of DU until the top of the fourth inning, when Freshman Austin Long hit a sacrifice fly to left field that scored Sophomore Christian Pogorzelski to make the score 3-1.
-Dominican added another run at the top of the fifth inning with Johnson hitting an RBI single down the right field line that scored Earley.
-For the third straight inning, the Stars added a run. Senior Ricky Powell hit an RBI single through the left side that scored Pogorzelski.
-The Tornados found a strike of lightning in the bottom of the sixth innin,g scoring 3 runs on a hit, while taking advantage of 4 Dominican errors.
-The one-run lead did not last long with the Stars exploding for a 4-run inning in the 7th. Long walked with the bases loaded for the first run of the inning, scoring Freshman Eric Sanchez. Helein followed it up with a three RBI triple to right field that scored Long, Pogorzelski, and Junior Connor Kalinowski.
-The score remained 9-4 in favor of Dominican until the top of the ninth inning, when the Stars added 5 runs to give themselves a 10-run lead.
-Long brought home the first two runs on an error by the Brevard catcher, scoring Kalinowski and Sophomore Cooper Marquez. Powell followed it up with an RBI single to left field, bringing home Long. Powell then crossed home on a wild pitch. Krecu drove home the final run of the game with a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Earley.
-The Tornados got a runner on in the bottom of the 9th inning before Junior Kian Flynn shut the door on a scoreless inning with 2 strikeouts in the inning.


Shining Stars:
-Senior Zach Helein earned Star of the game, going 3-6 with 3 RBI's, a double, and a triple.
-Sophomore Christian Pogorzelski had his best game in a Dominican uniform, going 3-5 with 3 runs scored and a double.
-Senior Ricky Powell found his stride in the Stars Uniform, going 2-6 with 2 RBI's.
-Senior Tyler Johnson had himself a game, going 2-3 with 2 RBI's, a double, and a walk.
-Senior Matthew Earley went 1-3 with 3 walks and 3 runs scored, along with 2 stolen bases.
-Graduate Student Matthew Hannafin made his first start of the season, going 5.2 innings pitched with 4 strikeouts, and only giving up 1 earned run.

How it Happened:
-Both teams were held scoreless in the first and second innings.
-Dominican found the first run of the game in the top of the third inning with Senior Matthew Earley grounding into a double play, but Senior Zach Helein crossed home.
-The Colonels answered in their half of the third inning by scoring a run on a hit.
-The 13th team in the nation added 2 runs in the bottom of the 5th inning, scoring 2 runs on 2 hits.
-The score remained 3-1 until the ninth inning when the Stars found some two-out magic to take the lead.
-After the first two hitters got out, Junior Connor Kalinowski singled to shortstop. Senior Zach Helein followed it up with a single to right field that brought Kalinowski to third.
-Senior Ricky Powell brought home the first run of the inning with a single through the left side that scored Kalinowski.
-Senior Matthew Earley gave the Stars the lead with a 2 RBI double down the left field line that brought home Powell and Helein, giving DU a 4-3 lead.
-Freshman Austin Long, who came into pitch in the 5th inning still on the bump for DU and was ready to close the door on the Colonels.
-Long got three fly outs in the bottom of the 9th inning to secure the victory over the thirteenth team in the nation.
 
Shining Stars:
-Freshman Austin Long earned Star of the Game in his relief outing. Long threw 5 scoreless innings with 3 strikeouts.
-Junior Langdon Downing started the game for DU and threw 4 innings with 3 strikeouts.
-Senior Zach Helein went 3-5 with 2 runs scored and a stolen base.
-Senior Ricky Powell continued his fantastic day, going 3-5 with an RBI and a run scored.
-Senior Matthew Earley came up clutch with the game-winning hit in the top of the 9th inning on a 2 RBI double.

On the day Senior Zach Helein went 6-11 with a double, a triple, 3 RBI's, 3 runs scored, and a stolen base.
On the day Senior Ricky Powell went 5-11 with 3 RBI's and 2 runs scored.
 
What's Next:
Dominican University Baseball team improves to 3-0 on the season after the Centre College Invite. The Stars will be back on the diamond in the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational on March 7th. The spring break will start with a double-header against Roger Williams University, with the first pitch being at 12:45 p.m. EST. DU Baseball will play 8 games down in Florida.
