Auburndale, FL. – RV Dominican University Baseball looked to close out the RussMatt Invitational on a high note against Macalester on Saturday morning.

How it Happened:
-The beginning innings of the game saw defense as a priority, with both teams held scoreless through the first two.
-Junior
Langdon Downing, who started on the mound for the Stars, recorded a three-up, three-down inning in the top of the third.
-To start the bottom of the third inning, Senior
Zach Helein beat a throw to first for an infield single but was caught stealing. Senior
Ricky Powell then powered a ground-rule double to left field. Following Powell's at-bat, Senior
Matthew Earley lined a ball to left field, which was dropped by the Macalester defender, allowing Powell to score. Senior
Niko Krecu followed Earley with a two-run shot to left that just stayed on the fair side of the foul pole to give Dominican a 3-0 lead after three.
-Downing continued to roll on the mound, holding Macalester scoreless through five innings.
-DU started the bottom of the fifth with a walk on Helein. The Las Vegas native was then able to reach second on a passed ball. Earley then drove home Helein with a single to left, as the Stars' lead grew to 4-0.
-In the top of the sixth, Macalester drove in a run to cut the Dominican lead to 4-1.
-The Scots then tied up the ballgame at the top of the seventh with three runs.
-With DU's bats going cold, Macalester snagged a 5-4 lead in the top of the eighth.
-The Stars were unable to even the score in the bottom of the ninth, dropping the ballgame to Macalester by a final score of 5-4.

Zach Helein finished 2-3 with two walks, a double, and a run scored.

Matthew Earley went 2-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

Niko Krecu was 1-3 with a two-RBI homer.

Langdon Downing threw 5.2 innings in his start, allowing just one run while accruing 7 strikeouts.

RV Dominican University Baseball falls to 6-5 (0-0 NACC) on the 2026 season. The Stars will return home after finishing 3-5 at the RussMatt Invitational and get set for a road game at Monmouth College on Thursday, March 19
th. First pitch against the Scots will be at 1:00 p.m.
