Stars Fall in NACC Opener to Falcons

River Grove, Ill. - The Dominican University Softball team returned to action at Triton College to face off against NACC opponent Concordia Wisconsin.

Results:

How it Happened:
-Concordia Wisconsin got the game started, scoring 2 runs on 3 hits in the top of the 1st inning. 
-Dominican tried to answer with Sophomore Raegyn Davis, Senior Ryley Davis, and Junior Kailee Diaz Randall all got two-out singles, but DU could not drive home the runners. 
-The Falcons added to their lead, scoring 3 runs on one hit and taking advantage of 2 Dominican errors. 
-The Stars went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the second inning. 
-The Falcons were held scoreless, despite earning a two-out hit. 
-DU got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third inning. Sophomore Kayla Amormino drew a one-out walk to get the inning started. Rae. Davis followed it up by hitting a a double off the wall in centerfield. Amormino was held at third. Ry. Davis followed her younger sister with a two-RBI to right field. 
-The score was 5-2 going to the top of the 4th inning. CUW responded by getting a run on two hits. 
-DU left two runners on base in the bottom of the fourth, keeping the score at 6-2.
-Concordia Wisconsin made it 7-2 after scoring a run on two hits in the 5th inning.
-Ry.Davis made it a 3-3 day with a one-out single to center field. The Stars could not generate the run, though. 
-Sophomore relief pitcher Rhiannon Rubio held the Falcons still by getting them in order in the top of the 6th.
-Sophomores Madisen Butler and Sara Cornell hit back-to-back singles with one out, but Dominican could not score the runners.
-CUW added a run in the top of the 7th inning on one hit and took advantage of two Dominican errors. 
-The seventh inning started off with the Davis sisters each getting on base. Rae. Davis hit a single to left field. Ry. Davis hit a double off the left-center wall. Junior Kailee Diaz Randall drove home Rae. Davis on an infield single to shortstop.
-The bottom of the seventh continued with Freshman Erin Kelleher drawing a bases-loaded walk that scored Ry.Davis. Cornell drove home the third run of the inning on a sacrifice fly to right-center field. The Stars couldn't get more after the 3 and fell 8-5.
 
Shining Stars:
-Senior Ryley Davis went 4-4 with 2 RBIs, a run scored, and a double.
-Sophomore Raegyn Davis swung a hot bat going 3-4 with 2 runs scored and a double.
-Junior Kailee Diaz Randall went 2-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
-Sophomore Sara Cornell went 1-3 with an RBI.
-Freshman Erin Kelleher drew a bases-loaded walk in her only plate appearance.

How it Happened:
-CUW started game two by scoring a run on a hit and taking advantage of a DU error. 
-The Stars went 1-2-3 in their half of the first inning. 
-Concordia Wisconsin followed suit in going 1-2-3 in the top of the second inning. 
-Dominican got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second inning. Senior Paytin Salfi started the inning off with a solo homerun to centerfield. Sophomore Madisen Butler followed it up with an RBI double off the centerfield wall, scoring Junior Emma Slavens from first base. Sophomore Isabella Olmos continued the inning with an RBI single through the left side, scoring Butler from third base. 
-DU took a 3-1 lead to the top of the third inning. 
-Junior starting pitcher Liberty Rivard kept rolling in the third inning, holding the Falcons at 1 run and leaving runners stranded on first and second. 
-Senior Ryley Davis continued to hit the ball well for Dominican, getting a one-out single, but did not cross the plate.
-CUW went in order in the top of the fourth inning.
-The Stars stranded a runner on second base in their half for the fourth. 
-Concordia Wisconsin responded with a big 5th inning, scoring 3 runs on 4 hits in the inning.
-DU did not have a response to the CUW runs. 
-Both teams were held scoreless in the 6th inning. 
-The Falcons exploded in the top of the 7th, scoring 5 runs, with the exclamation point being a grand slam. 
-Dominican was able to get one run across the board in the bottom of the seventh with Sophomore Kayla Amormino scoring on an error by the right fielder, but the Stars could not scratch any more runs across the board.

Shining Stars:
-Senior Ryley Davis continued her momentum into the second game, going 2-4.
-Senior Paytin Salfi went 1-3 with a solo homerun. Salfi recorded an RBI and scored a run on the solo shot.
-Sophomore Isabella Olmos went 2-4 with an RBI.
-Sophomore Madisen Butler went 1-2 with a walk, a run scored, an RBI, and a double.

Senior Ryley Davis went 6-8 with 2 RBIs, a run scored, and a double in both games this afternoon. 

What's Next:
Dominican University Softball moves to 6-10 on the season and 0-2 in conference play. The Stars will be right back in action tomorrow afternoon, with a doubleheader at Rockford University. The first pitch between DU and the Regents is set for 12:00 p.m.
