Stars Fall at Wintrust Field to the Cougars

Schaumburg, Ill. – The Dominican University Baseball was back at Wintrust Field for the Division Street rivalry on Wednesday afternoon. 
 
Game 1 Results:
Dominican: 11
Concordia Chicago: 17

How it Happened:
-The Cougars scored two runs on one hit in the top of the first inning.
-Dominican got runners on first and second base but could not manufacture the runs.
-CUC kept the momentum rolling by getting a run on one hit in the top of the second inning.
-The Stars got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second inning, putting up a 5-spot on CUC.
-The inning started with Freshman Abel Flessner walking, right after Junior Alex Garcia crushed a two-run homerun to centerfield, making the score 3-2 in favor of CUC. The inning did not end there, with Sophomore Marco Stawski getting hit by a pitch, then Freshman Austin Long singling to third base. That brought up Senior Zach Helein with runners on first and second, where Helein hit the second homerun of the inning. This one to left-center field, giving the Stars a 5-3 lead into the top of the third.
-Concordia Chicago kept the trend of scoring in every inning by getting 4 runs on 3 hits while taking advantage of one Dominican error. The Cougars regained a 7-5 lead.
-DU struck back in their half of the third inning, with Senior Ricky Powell starting off the inning by getting hit by a pitch. Powell scored on a double to left field by Stawski. The inning continued with Helein hitting an RBI single to right field that scored Stawski.
-The Cougars added a run in the fourth inning by scoring a run on two hits.
-The Stars regained the lead in their half of the fourth inning, scoring 2 runs and making the score 9-8.
-The inning started with Senior Niko Krecu getting hit by a pitch. Garcia then drove home Krecu on a single to centerfield. Stawski followed it up by collecting his second RBI on a sacrifice fly, scoring Senior Tyler Johnson.
-Concordia Chicago made it 5 straight innings by scoring a run on two hits.
-The Stars only brought up three batters to the plate.
-For the first time in the game, Dominican held CUC scoreless.
-The Stars used the momentum from the scoreless inning to score two runs on a two-run homerun off the bat of Powell, scoring Johnson.
-The Stars took an 11-9 lead into the top of the 7th inning.
-The Cougars got right back on track, scoring 2 on a hit and tying the game up at 11.
-Dominican went three up and three down in the bottom of the 7th inning.
-Concordia Chicago exploded for 6 runs on 5 hits in the top of the 8th inning.
-Dominican left a runner on second base in their half of the 8th inning.
-The Cougars left two runners on base in the top of the 9th, but the Stars held the score at 17-11 going into the bottom of the 9th.
-DU left Stawski on second base in the 9th and fell 17-11 in game one of the doubleheader.

Shining Stars:
-Senior Zach Helein led the way, going 2-5 with 4 RBIs, a run scored, a hit by pitch, and a homerun.
-Junior Alex Garcia swung a hot bat, going 2-5 with 3 RBIs, a run scored, and a homerun.
-Senior Ricky Powell has continued to be a staple in the DU offense, going 2-4 with 2 RBIs, 2 runs scored, a hit by pitch, and a homerun.
-Sophomore Marco Stawski was on fire, going 2-3 with 2 RBIs, 2 runs scored, a hit by pitch, and a double.

How it Happened:
-Concordia Chicago struck quickly, adding two solo shots in the top of the first.
-Dominican responded with a crooked number of their own. Freshman Austin Long led the inning off with a single, and Senior Matthew Earley walked to put two runners on base. Senior Niko Krecu got DU on the board, doubling to right field, scoring Long from second base. Senior Ricky Powell hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Earley. The final run of the inning came off the bat Freshman Abel Flessner, scoring Krecu.
-The Stars took a 3-2 lead into the second inning.
-CUC sent three batters to the plate, including a double play that ended the inning.
-Dominican left two runners on base in the second inning.
-The Cougars offense exploded for 11 runs on 10 hits in the top of the third inning and made the score 13-3 in favor of CUC.
-DU got a run in the bottom of the fourth inning with Long reaching on an error and Flessner scoring on the play.
-Concordia Chicago got one run on two hits in the top of the sixth inning.
-The Stars threatened to extend the game by getting a runner on second base in the bottom of the 7th, but could not get him around to score.
 
Shining Stars:
-Freshman Austin Long finished 3-4 at the plate and scored a run with a stolen base.
-Freshman Abel Flessner came along nicely, going 2-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

What's Next:
Dominican University Baseball moves to 6-10 (0-4 NACC) on the season. The Stars will hit the road for their first road conference battle of the season. DU baseball will travel to Mequon, Wisconsin, for a conference doubleheader against the Falcons. The first pitch of game one is at 12:00 p.m.
