Madison, Wis. – Dominican University Baseball continued its extended road swing with a doubleheader at Edgewood on Saturday.
Game 1 Results:
Dominican: 14
Edgewood: 13
How it Happened:
-Dominican struck first and surged out to a 2-0 at the top of the first after Senior
Ricky Powell homered down the left field line, which brought home Senior
Zach Helein. Edgewood countered with two runs in the first and two runs in the second to take a 4-2 lead.
-Both squads were then silenced offensively, as Freshman
Hunter Zierleyn pitched scoreless innings in the third and fourth.
-At the top of the fifth, the Stars offense responded, with was sparked by a leadoff single by Freshman
Austin Long. Helein then singled to right. Helein and Long then moved up ninety feet on a failed pickoff attempt, where Senior
Niko Krecu ultimately drove Long in on a sacrifice fly, cutting the Eagles' lead to 4-3.
-Edgewood extended its lead out to 6-3 in the bottom of the fifth.
-DU kept chipping away at the Edgewood advantage, pulling a run back at the top of the sixth after a Helein double scored Junior
Aidan Groberski, then another at the top of the seventh after Sophomore
Christian Pogorzelski drove in Krecu with a single. The Stars trailed 6-5 heading into the bottom of the seventh.
-The Eagles offense exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the seventh and took a 13-5 lead.
-At the top of the eighth, Long and Helein both singled to start the half inning. Powell then doubled to left, which scored Long. Senior
Tyler Johnson then singled to left, bringing home Helein. Powell then scored on a fielder's choice, forced by Junior
Alex Garcia. By the end of the eighth inning, DU trailed 13-8.
-Looking for some magic at the top of the ninth, Freshman
Ryan McGrew led off with a single. Long then launched his first collegiate homer to bring the score to 13-10. Helein then reached via an Edgewood error, followed by Powell being hit by a pitch. Krecu doubled down the left field line, which scored Helein, bringing Dominican to within two. Johnson then sent a three-run go ahead homer to left, putting the Stars ahead 14-13 after the top of the ninth. Senior
Aaron O'Grady took the mound for DU and earned the save at the bottom of the ninth, as the Stars stormed back to take Game 1 by a final score of 14-13.

Zach Helein earned Star of the Game honors, going 4-6 with a double and an RBI.

Austin Long finished 3-5 with his first collegiate home run, which drove in two runs.

Game 2 Results (F):

How it Happened:
-Edgewood got the upper hand in Game 2, as the Eagles took a 1-0 lead after the first inning.
-The Stars answered back at the top of the second, as Junior
Alex Garcia drew a walk to reach base. A single by Senior
Matthew Earley advanced Garcia to third, then Sophomore
Christian Pogorzelski drove home Garcia with an RBI single to right.
-The Eagles regained the lead, this time at 2-1, at the bottom of the second. Edgewood then doubled their lead to 3-1 at the bottom of the third.
-DU's bats were silenced after their run in the second, with back-to-back hitless innings in the third and fourth.
-Edgewood extended its lead to 4-1 at the bottom of the fourth.
-Looking to get back into the game, the Stars had runners on second and third at the top of the fifth but were thrown out at home in a close play. Edgewood countered with a two-run shot at the bottom of the fifth to push its lead to 6-1.
-The Stars continued to get base runners but could not drive any runs home, leaving the bases loaded in the top of the eighth inning.
-Edgewood added an insurance run at the bottom of the eighth inning, as DU dropped Game 2 by a final score of 7-1.

Austin Long finished 3-4.
-Sophomore
Christian Pogorzelski was 3-4 with an RBI.

Koufax Cranmer pitched 2.1 innings in relief and allowed just 2 hits.
-Senior
Jackson Tanko pitched a scoreless inning for DU in the eighth.

Dominican University Baseball moves to 11-16 (4-10 NACC) on the season. The Stars will continue on the road to Marian on Wednesday, April 15
th, for a doubleheader against the Sabres. First pitch of Game 1 is slated for 1:00 p.m.
