Dominican Splits Series with Marian on the Road

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Milwaukee, Wis. – Dominican University Baseball faced off against Marian in a doubleheader series set at MSOE on Tuesday.
 
Game 1 Results:
Dominican: 6
Marian: 4

How it Happened:
-After a scoreless first two innings, DU opened the scoring at the top of the third, which started with a single by Freshman Austin Long. Long then advanced to third on a failed pickoff, and reached home on a groundout by Senior Ricky Powell. Senior Niko Krecu and Junior Alex Garcia then walked, and Sophomore Christian Pogorzelski singled to right field, which scored Krecu, giving the Stars a 2-0 lead.
-Junior Langdon Downing continued his strong start by holding the Sabres scoreless at the bottom of the third.
-At the top of the fourth, Senior Matthew Earley sent a double to center and eventually scored on a fielder's choice to extend the DU advantage to 3-0.
-Marian clawed back a run at the bottom of the fifth.
-The next half inning, at the top of the sixth, the Stars reasserted their grip on the game. Earley began the inning with a single to left and advanced to third on a single by Long. Senior Zach Helein then hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Earley. Powell and Krecu then reached base, loading them up with two out. Garcia drew a walk, which brought in Long and ultimately pushed the Dominican lead to 5-1.
-Sophomore Koufax Cranmer, who entered the game in relief of Downing, shut down the Sabre bats between the sixth and seventh innings.
-At the bottom of the eighth, Marian hit a three-run homer to cut the DU advantage to 5-4. The Stars then countered at the top of the ninth to go up 6-4 after a single by Earley scored Junior Connor Kalinowski.
-At the bottom of the ninth, Senior Aaron O'Grady was entrusted with closing the game out and did, earning his 4th save in the process as the Stars took Game 1 by a final score of 6-4.

Shining Stars:
-Junior Langdon Downing notched his first win of the season on the mound for the Stars, throwing 5.0 innings and allowing just one hit and one run.
-Freshman Austin Long finished 3-6 with an RBI and 2 runs scored.
-Senior Tyler Johnson went 3-5.
-Senior Matthew Earley was 3-5 with a double and two runs scored.
-Junior Alex Garcia was 1-2 with 3 walks and the game-winning RBI.

Game 2 Results:
Dominican: 13
Marian: 15

How it Happened:
-DU once again struck first at the top of the second, which started with a pair of hits by Sophomore Chirstian Pogorzelski and Senior Matthew Earley. Freshman Cooper Marquez then singled to right, which brought home both. Freshman Austin Long singled to center, and Senior Zach Helein was hit by a pitch, loading the bases with one out. Senior Ricky Powell was able to score Long and Marquez with a single through the infield, putting Dominican up 4-0.
-Earley then sent a two-run shot to left at the top of the third, extending the Stars' lead to 6-0.
-Freshman Logan Komperda was putting together a solid start for DU, but the Sabres were able to get on the board at the bottom of the fifth, cutting the score to 6-3.
-At the top of the seventh, Powell was hit by a pitch and went on to score on a throwing error to push the Dominican advantage to 7-3.
-Marian's offense exploded at the bottom of the seventh, as the Sabres put up 12 runs and took usurped the lead from the Stars, who now trailed 15-7.
-The Stars, now fighting from behind, loaded the bases with Junior Aidan Groberski, Long, and Senior Zach Helein. Groberski scored on a throwing error, and Senior Niko Krecu knocked in Long and Helein with a single, cutting the deficit to 15-10. Dominican then added another run as Powell scored on a fielder's choice.
-Trailing by four runs heading into the top of the ninth, Freshman Ryan McGrew drew a leadoff walk, followed by a homer to left by Long, with the Stars now trailing 15-13.
-The rally ended there for the Stars, as DU dropped Game 2 by a final score of 15-13.
 
Shining Stars:
-Senior Ricky Powell finished 3-4 with 3 RBIs and 2 runs scored.
-Senior Matthew Earley went 3-5 with 2 RBIs, a home run, a double, and 2 runs scored.
-Freshman Austin Long was 3-5 at the plate with 2 RBIs, a home run, and 3 runs scored.
-Freshman Cooper Marquez finished 2-2 with 2 RBIs.   
 -Sophomore Christian Pogorzelski went 2-6 with an RBI and 2 runs scored.

What's Next:
Dominican University Baseball moves to 12-17 (4-10 NACC) on the season. The Stars will return to Wintrust Field on Saturday, April 18th, for Senior Day and Alumni Day and will take on Wisconsin Lutheran in a doubleheader. First pitch against the Warriors is slated for 12:00 p.m.
