Softball Sweeps St. Norbert on Cancer Day

Rosemont, Ill. – The Dominican University Softball team returned to the Stadium at the Parkway Bank Sports Complex for their final two conference series of the season. The Stars hosted St. Norbert College on Cancer Day.

Results (Game 1):
Dominican: 11
St. Norbert: 4
 
How it Happened:
-Both teams were held scoreless in the first inning, but the Stars cracked open the game in the bottom of the second inning. The second inning started with Junior Emme Slavens drawing a walk and Freshman Charlie Harris singling to right field. Sophomore Madisen Butler brought home the first run of the game on a bunt that was thrown into right field by the third baseman. Sophomore Sara Cornell followed it up with an RBI single to center field, scoring Harris. Sophomore Kayla Amormino hit a single to left field that brought home Butler. The final run of the inning came from Senior Paytin Salfi drew a four-pitch walk with the bases loaded.
-Sophomore starting Hannah Richards was rolling in the third inning getting the Green Knights to go 1-2-3 and turned the ball back over to the offense for DU.
-The Dominican offense kept that rolling, scoring 6 runs on 6 hits while taking advantage of 2 Green Knights errors.
-Harris doubled to start off the inning, while Butler brought Harris home on another bunt that was thrown into right field. As the inning continued, the bases were loaded for Salfi who hit a bases-clearing double, scoring Sophomore Isabella Olmos, Amormino, and Junior Kailee Diaz Randall. Sophomore Raegyn Davis kept the momentum rolling with an RBI hit, scoring Salfi. Slavens brought home the final run of the inning on an RBI double to left field that brought home Rae. Davis.
The score remained 10-0 until the top of the 5th inning, when St. Norbert scored 4 runs on 4 hits.
-DU got a run back in the bottom of the 5th with Freshman Erin Kelleher singling to shortstop, which brought home Freshman Kendall Parker.
-The score would hold true at 11-4, with Dominican earning their 22nd win of the season.
   
 
Shining Stars:
-Senior Paytin Salfi earned Star of the Game going 1-2 with 4 RBIs, a walk, a run scored, and a double.
-Sophomore Raegyn Davis went 2-4 with an RBI, a run scored, and a double.
-Sophomore Kayla Amormino had a fantastic day at the plate going 2-2 with an RBI and a run scored.
-Freshman Charlie Harris went 2-3 with 2 runs scored and a double.
-Sophomore Hannah Richards started in the circle for the Stars and went 4 scoreless innings, earning 3 strikeouts in her 12th win of the season.

How it Happened:
-The game started the same way as the first, with nobody scoring in the first inning and Dominican scratching a run across in the bottom of the second. After the first two hitters got out in the second. Sophomore Kayla Amormino hit a single to center field and would come home on an RBI triple by Sophomore Isabella Olmos.
-Sophomore starting pitcher Rhiannon Rubio retired the first 9 hitters for the Green Knights, carrying a perfect game into the fourth.
-The Stars battled for two more runs in the bottom of the third inning. Senior Ryley Davis started off the inning with a single to left field. Freshman Charlie Harris followed it up with an RBI triple of her own, scoring Ry. Davis from first. Sophomore Madisen Butler brought home Harris on a sacrifice fly to center field.
-SNC earned their first hit of the game in the top of the fourth inning but nothing more as DU had an inning-ending double play.
-The score remained 3-0 in favor of Dominican until the bottom of the 5th when DU exploded for 5 runs on 3 hits in the inning to end the game.
-The inning started with Junior Kailee Diaz Randall and Harris both reaching base with one out. The bases would end up loaded for Sophomore Sara Cornell who was hit by a pitch to drive home the first run of the game. Amormino was next in the lineup and hit a 2 RBI double to left field that brought home Butler and Harris. Senior Paytin Salfi ended the game with a two RBI single to right field that scored Cornell and the winning run, Amormino.
 
Shining Stars:
-Sophomore Rhiannon Rubio earned Star of the game by throwing 5 scoreless innings with 4 strikeouts in her 7th win of the season.
-Senior Paytin Salfi had the winning hit and went 1-1 with 2 RBIs and 3 walks.
-Sophomore Kayla Amormino had her best day of the season, going 2-3 with 2 RBIs, a double, and 2 runs scored.
-Sophomore Isabella Olmos went 2-2 with 2 walks, an RBI, and a triple.
-Freshman Charlie Harris went 2-3 with an RBI, two runs scored, and a triple.

Sophomore Kayla Amormino was incredible in every fashion for the Stars today, throwing runners out at home from center and making diving plays, but she went 4-5 with 3 RBIs, 3 runs scored, and a double at the plate this afternoon.


What's Next:
Dominican University Softball moves to 23-13 on the season and 17-5 in conference play. The Stars keep their top spot in the NACC standings and are two conference wins away from earning a share of the NACC Regular Season Conference Championship. Dominican Softball will be back in action tomorrow afternoon for senior day as the Stars host Alverno College at 12:00 p.m. at the Stadium at the Parkway Bank Sports Complex. DU will be honoring 4 seniors.
