Stars Win in Non-Conference Battle Over Blue Jays

Elmhurst, Ill. – The Dominican University Baseball team hit the road for a non-conference rodeo against the Blue Jays of Elmhurst on Tuesday afternoon.
 
Results:
Dominican: 7
Elmhurst: 6

How it Happened:
-The Stars got on the board in the top of the first inning with Senior Matthew Earley hitting a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Freshman Austin Long.
The Blue Jays quickly responded, scoring two runs on three hits and capitalizing on an error made by DU during the inning.
-Senior Niko Krecu tied the game up at two in the top of the third inning with an RBI single to left field that scored Senior Zach Helein.
-Once again Elmhurst responded by regaining a one-run lead on a hit in the bottom of the third.
-Senior Ricky Powell jacked a solo shot to left field in the top of the fourth inning to tie the game at 3.
-The Blue Jays saw Powell's leadoff homer and responded with one of their own to once again regain a one-run lead.
-Dominican kept their offense rolling in the fifth by Krecu singling to right field that scored Long and Freshman Eric Sanchez and took a 5-4 lead.
-Elmhurst made it three straight innings scoring by tying the game up at five on a run and hit in the bottom of the fifth.
-DU made it four straight innings scoring, with Long hitting an RBI single to left field that scored Sanchez and Sophomore Marco Stawski.
-DU held a 7-5 lead going to the 7th inning.
-In the bottom of the seventh, Elmhurst cut the lead to just one, scoring a run on no hits.
-Sophomore Parker Linnig came into the game to start the 8th inning and picked up a six out save only allowing two base runners in his two innings of work.

Shining Stars:
-Senior Niko Krecu earned Star of the Game going 3-5 with 3 RBIs.
-Freshman Austin Long had himself a day going 2-4 with 2 RBIs, 2 runs scored, a walk, and a stolen base.
-Senior Ricky Powell has continued to play well for Dominican, going 2-5 with a homerun, an RBI, and a run scored.
-Freshman Eric Sanchez had his best day in a Stars uniform, going 2-3 with 2 runs scored and 2 doubles.
-Senior Zach Helein has been phenomenal in the two spot going 1-2 with a run scored, 2 hit-by-pitches, and a stolen base.

What's Next:
Dominican University Baseball moves to 10-13 (3-7 NACC) on the season. The Stars will return to Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play with a doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at Benedictine. The first pitch between the Stars and the Eagles is set for 1:00 p.m.
