Stars Suffer Back-to-Back Heartbreakers

Lisle, Ill. – The Dominican University Baseball team hit the road for back-to-back days of baseball. The Stars were at Benedictine on Wednesday for a conference doubleheader.
 
Game 1 Results:
Dominican: 5
Benedictine: 6

How it Happened:
- Both teams were held scoreless in the first inning, with the Dominican offense exploding for three runs in the top of the second.
-Junior Alex Garcia led the inning off with a double to left center field. Senior Tyler Johnson followed it up with a single through the left side, putting runners on the corners. Sophomore Christian Pogorzelski cashed in with an RBI single to right field, scoring Garcia from third. Freshman Austin Long continued the inning by scoring Johnson on a groundout to second base. The last run of the inning came off the bat of Senior Zach Helein, hitting an RBI double to left field.
-Benedictine responded with 5 runs on 3 hits while taking advantage of 2 DU errors.
- After an 8-run second inning by both teams, the Eagles took a 5-3 lead to the third inning.
-The score held at 5-3 until the bottom of the fifth inning when a leadoff home run by BenU brought the lead to 6-3 for the Eagles.
-The Stars did not go down without a fight, as Senior Niko Krecu hit a solo homerun to left field in the top of the 8th inning. The inning went forward with Senior Ricky Powell getting hit by a pitch and Garcia singling to left field. Johnson brought it to a one-run deficit by hitting an RBI single to center field, scoring Powell from second base.
-Dominican went to the top of the 9th inning down by a run and got two runners on base but was unable to get that tying run across the board.

Shining Stars:
-Junior Alex Garcia led the Stars, going 3-4 with a run scored and a double.
-Senior Niko Krecu went 2-3 with a homerun, 2 walks, an RBI, and a run scored.
-Senior Tyler Johnson has continued to play a great first base, going 2-3 with a walk, an RBI, and a run scored.
-Sophomore Christian Pogorzelski has played all over the infield for the Stars and went 2-4 with an RBI and run scored on Wednesday.

How it Happened:
-After Dominican went three-up and three-down in the top of the first, the Eagles scored 2 runs on 2 hits in their half of the first.
-Benedictine tacked on another run in the second on three hits.
-DU got on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth inning with Senior Tyler Johnson hitting a three-run homerun to left field that scored Senior Niko Krecu and Junior Alex Garcia, who each hit singles.
-The score was tied at three going into the fifth inning.
-BenU regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth, scoring 2 runs on 3 hits.
-The score remained 5-3 in favor of the Eagles until the top of the 9th, where the Stars tied the game up at 5. Senior Zach Helein brought home the first RBI of the inning on a single to right field, scoring Freshman Austin Long. Krecu would bring home Helein on a sacrifice fly to center field.
-The Stars went to the bottom of the 9th tied at 5 and handed the ball off to Senior Jackson Tanko who got the first out of the inning but then would get the bases loaded with just one out. The next batter for Benedictine singled to left, walking it off for BenU.
 
Shining Stars:
-Senior Tyler Johnson cashed in on a three-run homerun in the game, going 1-2 with 3 RBIs, a walk, a hit-by-pitch, and a run scored.
-Senior Zach Helein went 2-5 with an RBI and a run scored.
-Freshman Austin Long went 2-5 with a run scored and a stolen base.
-Sophomore Christian Pogorzelski went 2-4.

What's Next:
Dominican University Baseball moves to 10-15 (3-9 NACC) on the season. The Stars will continue their mini road trip Saturday afternoon, as they travel to Madison, Wisconsin, for a doubleheader against the Eagles of Edgewood University. The first pitch is set for 12:00 p.m. in game one.
