The Dominican University men’s soccer team began its quest for a fifth straight Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) championship on Saturday, opening NAC play with a 5-0 win over the Maranatha Baptist Bible College Crusaders. Dominican’s Michael Kapusta (Bartlett, Ill.) played a part on Dominican’s first four goals of the afternoon, including notching the game-winner in the 32
nd minute.
After Kapusta got the scoring started, Kapusta then assisted on a goal by Edwin Lagunas (Waukegan, Ill.) in the 37th minute before tallying his second goal of the game and team-leading third of the season before the end of the half.
Less than five minutes into the second half, the Stars extended their lead to four as Kapusta sent a ball into the corner where Andy Lynch (Hawthorn Woods, Ill.) got on the end and crossed into the box to Leo Elizalde (Wheeling, Ill.) who beat the Crusaders’ goalkeeper for his first score of the season.
Nearly thirty minutes later, freshman Petar Milenkovich (Hoffman Estates, Ill.) scored his first career-collegiate goal to give the Stars a 5-0 lead.
Junior goalkeeper Maxwell Gutbrod (Slinger, Wis.) extended his shutout streak to four games, keeping the Crusaders off the scoreboard while logging one save while facing four shots. Dominican outshot the Crusaders by a count of 27-4 and held a 10-0 advantage in corner kicks.
The Stars will travel to Elmhurst on Wednesday to take on the Elmhurst College Bluejays in non-conference action. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. at Berens Park.
