The Dominican University softball team recovered from a pair of losses on Monday with a 10-1 five-inning victory over the Bethany Lutheran College Vikings in the first of two games on Wednesday.
Sophomore right-hander
Emily Mahoney (Crystal Lake, Ill.) picked up the win in the circle for the Stars, surrendering just two hits over three innings while walking none and striking out five. The lone mistake Mahoney made in the ballgame was a leadoff home run in the bottom of the second inning.
Offensively, junior
Corinne Zimmerman (Chicago Heights, Ill.) went 2-for-2 at the plate with three runs batted in and one run scored. In the top of the second, Zimmerman ripped a one-out single into right with runners on first and second to send home
Mary Costello (Chicago, Ill.) and give the Stars a 1-0 advantage. Freshman
Beth Santor (Oak Lawn, Ill.) promptly followed with an RBI single of her own to stake the Stars to a 2-0 lead after one and a half innings of play.
After a leadoff homer by the Vikings Ashely Jensen cut the Stars’ lead in half, Dominican answered with a six-run third which was highlighted by a two-run double to right by Zimmerman.
The Stars stand at 2-3 after the win and play the Regis College Pride later in the day on Wednesday. Dominican then closes out its Florida spring trip with games against Worcester Polytechnic Institute and Neumann University on Thursday.
