The Dominican University softball team carried off the momentum started in a 10-1 win over Bethany Lutheran in game one on Wednesday, posting a 10-2 five-inning victory over the Regis College Pride in Wednesday’s second game for the Stars.
As she did in the first game, sophomore Emily Mahoney (Crystal Lake, Ill.) picked up the win in the circle for the Stars, going four innings before returning to the mound to get the final out in a two-run fifth inning for the Pride. Mahoney allowed just one hit with three walks while striking out six to improve to 3-2 on the season and lowering her ERA to 3.63 after allowing just one run over seven-plus innings of work on Wednesday.
As they had done against Bethany Lutheran, the Stars’ offense staked Mahoney to an early lead, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first. Junior Sarah Budz (Orland Park, Ill.) started the game with a single to left. After stealing second, Budz scored on a double by Kristen Look (Frankfort, Ill.). Corinne Zimmerman (Chicago Heights, Ill.) continued to swing a hot bat, driving home look with a single to center.
Dominican then posted six runs in the third, highlighted by a bases-clearing triple off the bat of Budz after the Stars had six hitters reach base safely with one out.
Cary Thereon (South Elgin, Ill.) took to the circle for the Stars in the top of the fifth. Thereon allowed two runs, both earned, surrendering two walks, two hits and hitting a batter all after two outs. Mahoney then returned for the final out of the inning, leaving the bases loaded for the Pride.
The Stars answered with a pair of runs of their own in the bottom half of the fifth, to take the eight-run victory in five innings.
Dominican has pulled back to .500 at 3-3 on the season with two games remaining on the Stars’ spring trip to Fort Myers, Fla. On Thursday the Stars will play the WPI Engineers and Neumann University Knights.
