The Dominican University softball team traveled to Lisle, Ill., to take on the Benedictine University Eagles on Sunday afternoon and the defending Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) champions wasted no time showing the Stars who the team to beat in the NAC is with a 13-1 victory over Dominican in game one and a 12-4 win in game two. The losses snapped a six-game win streak for the Stars who had won 13 of their last 14 games entering Sunday.
In game one, the Eagles scored two runs in the bottom of the first to jump out to the lead. After
Jori Cicale (Steger, Ill.) got the Eagles’ leadoff hitter to pop out for the first out, the Eagles’ Brittany Adcox reached on catcher’s interference before stealing second and scoring on a double to left-center by Kara Walsh who would later score on an RBI single by Cassie Cappetto.
The Eagles tacked on six more runs in the second, three in the third and two in the fourth to stake to a 13-0 lead heading into the top of the fifth. The Stars, needing six runs to keep the game going, loaded the bases but managed to scratch out just one run on an RBI single by
Kristen Look (Frankfort, Ill.).
The Stars managed just four hits in the contest off the Eagles’ Adcox, the 2010 NAC Pitcher of the Year.
Gina Palumbo (Northlake, Ill.) was on base twice for the Stars, going 1-for-1 with a single and a hit-by-pitch.
Cicale took the loss for Dominican, lasting just two innings before giving way to
Beth Santor (Oak Lawn, Ill.). Cicale falls to 6-2 on the season.
In game two, the Stars jumped out to a 3-1 lead after three innings behind a two-run double off the bat of
Sarah Budz (Orland Park, Ill.). However, an eight-run fourth inning but the Eagles ahead for good en route to their 18
th win of the season.
Emily Mahoney fell to 6-4 as the pitcher of record for the Stars.
Dominican does not have to sit on the losses long, as the Stars will host the Aurora University Spartans for a NAC doubleheader on Monday afternoon in Forest Park. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
