Baseball Drops Pair To Edgewood

The Dominican University baseball team dropped a Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) doubleheader to the Edgewood College Eagles on Monday night, falling in both contests by 5-3 counts. The losses drop the Stars to 7-20 overall and 4-7 in conference play.
Dan Hunoway (Tinley Park, Ill.) took the loss in game one, tossing a complete game, surrendering five runs, three earned, over eight innings of work. The Stars’ right-hander scattered eight hits, all singles, and three walks while striking out two.
The Eagles scratched out four runs in the bottom of the first against Hunoway after an error by shortstop Chad Polak (Westchester, Ill.) loaded the bases with one out. A walk forced in the first run before back-to-back singles by the Eagles’ Scott Ortega and Andrew King pushed across three more runs.
The Stars cut the deficit in half in the top of the second as Chris Kemp (Oak Lawn, Ill.) and Jesse Bongartz (Peoria, Ill.) roped back-to-back singles to start the inning. Kemp then scored on a groundout by designated hitter Chris Garvey (Niles, Ill.) and Bongartz scored after an Eagles’ throwing error.
The Eagles tacked another run on the board in the bottom of the fifth as Alex Jaskulski laid down a squeeze bunt with Jake Zadra at third.
The Stars threatened in the top of the sixth, plating one run as Chris Anderson (Plainfield, Ill.) singled to left-center and then went first to third on a single by Kemp. Sean Bolton (Western Springs, Ill.) then ripped an RBI single to right with one out but the Edgewood’s Blake O’Brien induced an inning-ending double play to squash the Stars’ rally.
O’Brien then gave way to Connor Lenz for the ninth who picked up the save, allowing one walk and no hits in one inning of work.
In game two, the Stars took a 3-1 lead in the third as Polak was hit by a pitch and then scored an unearned run. However, the Eagles pushed across four runs off of three Stars’ pitchers in the bottom of the fifth.
Bongartz took the loss on the mound for the Stars in the nightcap, falling to 1-1 on the season. The Stars’ 6’2 right-hander was charged with four runs on six hits and three walks in four-plus innings of work.
The Stars will next take on the Loras College Duhawks in non-conference action on Thursday at Alexian Field. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
