Sarah Budz (Orland Park, Ill.) tied a pair of NCAA records on Wednesday afternoon, launching a pair of grand slams which is an NCAA all-division record that has been done just five times since 1982 and drove in 12 runs, which was done back in April 1998 by Hunter College’s Giovanni Roberson. The banner day for the Stars’ junior came in game one of the Stars’ Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) doubleheader with the Alverno College Inferno, a game which the Stars claimed by a score of 20-3.
The Stars fell behind 3-0 in the bottom of the first as Alverno’s Stef Wilmore launched a three-run home run over the centerfield fence. However, the lead was short lived for the host Inferno as Budz’s first grand slam of the game capped a seven-run top of the second and the Stars never looked back.
Budz again stepped to the plate in the top of the third with the bases loaded and roped a ball of the fence in right-center to give Dominican a 13-3 lead. Budz’s at-bat in the top of the fourth came with two runners aboard as she ripped her NAC-leading ninth home run of the season.
In the fifth inning, Budz came to the plate with runners on second and third and grounded out to the pitcher but
Beth Santor (Oak Lawn, Ill.) scored from third to give Budz her 12
th RBI of the game.
Budz finished the game 3-for-5 with 12 total bases, 12 runs batted in and 3 runs scored.
As a team, the Stars were 21-for-38 at the plate with three doubles and four home runs.
Dominican appeared to be in control in game two, leading 7-2 through five and a half innings before surrendering six runs on seven hits and one error in the bottom half of the sixth as the Inferno stole game two from the Stars’ 8-7.
Kellee Laske picked up two hits in the Inferno’s six-run rally, including a two-run bloop single that proved to be the game-winning hit.
Dominican threatened in the top of the seventh as
Jori Cicale (Steger, Ill.) ripped a leadoff single to left.
Gina Palumbo (Northlake, Ill.) popped out and Mikeala Westbrook bunted Cicale over to second ahead of Budz. The Inferno walked Budz but
Kristen Look’s (Frankfort, Ill.) drive to center was caught to end the game.
Dominican moves to 19-11 on the season and 11-7 in NAC play. The Stars are scheduled to return to action on Friday when the Maranatha Baptist Bible College Crusaders come to Forest Park, Ill., to take on the Stars. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
