The Dominican University baseball team led 7-4 heading into the bottom of the eighth before falling 11-7 in game one and then dropping game two by a 9-4 count. The losses drop the Stars to 4-15 on the season and 1-3 in the Northern Athletics Conference (NAC).
In game one, after scoring four runs in the top of the eighth on four hits and leaving two on base, the Dominican University Stars surrendered seven runs on five hits and one error. Starting pitcher
Dan Hunoway (Chicago, Ill.) gave way to the Stars’ bullpen to start the eighth inning after surrendering four runs, three earned, on six hits and two walks while striking out five. However, the Stars’ bullpen allowed the first six hitters to reach base safely, including a two-run double off the bat of the Warriors’ Ethan Geis that proved to be the game-winning hit.
The Stars did load the bases in the top of the ninth, but failed to push any runs across as leadoff man Casimir Zwiazek (Chicago, Ill.) flew out to center to end the threat.
In game two, the Stars staked Zwiazek, the starting pitcher for the nightcap, to a 3-0 lead as
Lenny Cunzalo (Chicago, Ill.) launched a two-run double in the top of the first and then scored on a single off the bat of
Jesse Bongartz (Peoria, Ill.).
However, Zwiazek was lifted in a six-run fourth, surrendering seven runs on nine hits and five walks in three and two-thirds innings of work.
Dominican returns home to host the Maranatha Baptist Bible College Crusaders at Alexian Field on Friday. The doubleheader is slated to start at 12:00 p.m. The Stars will then head to Mequon, Wis., to take on the Concordia Wisconsin Falcons on Saturday.
