The Dominican University baseball team picked up its first doubleheader sweep of the season, posting a pair of wins over the Maranatha Baptist Bible College Crusaders 11-1 and 10-3 on Friday afternoon in Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) action.
Jesse Bongartz (Peoria, Ill.) picked up the win in game one. The Stars’ 6’2 right-hander allowed one run over six innings, scattering five hits and two walks while striking out six. The lone run was an unearned run in the top of the first as Garret Ordway, who reached on an error, scored on Joel Borchardt’s double that one-hopped the fence in left field.
Offensively, Bongartz helped his own cause, going 3-for-3 at the plate with a double and two runs batted in. Five other players collected a hit for the Stars, including Lenny Cunzalo (Chicago, Ill.) who went 1-for-3 with a sacrifice fly and three RBIs.
In game two freshman Saqib M. Mirza (Skokie, Ill.) picked up his first collegiate win, tossing seven-innings of five-hit baseball. The Stars’ right-hander allowed three runs, just one earned, while striking out seven and walking none.
Cunzalo picked up three more hits in game two, going 3-for-4 with a double and a walk. Chris Kemp (Oak Lawn, Ill.) and Sean Bolton (Western Springs, Ill.) drove in a pair of runs on two hits apiece while freshman Casimir Zwiazek (Chicago, Ill.) drove in three runs on a two-run single in the fourth and a sacrifice fly in the fifth.
Dominican now stands at 6-15 on the season and 3-3 in the NAC. The Stars return to NAC play on Saturday, traveling to Mequon, Wis., to take on the Concordia University Wisconsin Falcons. First pitch for the doubleheader is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
