Stars Sweep Pioneers in First Day of Cusic Classic

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 FORT MYERS, Fla. – Seniors Sean Bolton and Zack Roszak each tallied a win today as the Stars’ offense powered out 22 hits in a double-header versus the Carroll University Pioneers. With today’s sweep, the Stars improve their record to 4-0 on the season.

The Stars took a 2-0 lead right away in the first inning of game one as Richie Green (Chicago, Ill. /Lane Tech), Jon Basinski (Chicago Ridge, Ill. /Richards), and Adam Quinn (Libertyville, Ill.) hit back-to-back-to-back singles.

The score would remain 2-0 until the Stars grabbed runs in both the fourth and fifth innings, supporting four strikeouts by Sean Bolton (Western Springs, Ill. /Nazareth Academy) through five innings of play.

Bolton would retire two more in the bottom of the sixth inning before Basinski and Quinn came through again for the Stars in the top of the seventh when they extended their lead to 6-0.

The Pioneers would manage a run (unearned) in the bottom of the inning, but it wouldn’t be enough as the Stars’ Chris Garvey (Niles, Ill. /Maine East) picked off Klobukowski at third for the final out of the game.

Bolton recorded his second win of the season on seven innings pitched, six strikeouts, and just two hits, while the Stars’ offense was led by Basinski’s four hits in as many at-bats.

In game two of the doubleheader, the Pioneers got on the board first with a steal of home plate, but southpaw Zack Roszak (South Chicago, Ill. /Marian Catholic) would retire each of the next two batters to stop the Pioneers’ momentum and end the first half of the inning.

Dominican would record a run of their own in the bottom of the first, and then pour out five runs in the second to extend their lead to 6-1 before Carroll answered back with three runs in the third, closing the gap to 6-4.

But the Stars’ offense wasn’t done yet, as they scored four more runs in the bottom of the fourth and three more in the sixth to complete the sweep with a 13-6 victory in game two.

Green would finish the game with five RBI’s on four hits, while Basinski and Tim Dernulc (Dyer, Ind. /Marian Catholic) would record three and two hits, respectively. Roszak got the win on the mound, striking out four batters, before Mitch McCaffery (Johnson Creek, Wis.) came in to end the game and struck out three of seven batters he faced.

The Stars will look to keep their momentum when they face Illinois College tomorrow morning in a 9 AM EST matchup.
