Box Score 2 FORT MYERS, Fla. – Despite a 10-strikeout performance in the circle for junior right-hander Emily Mahoney, the Stars fell to Bridgewater State 3-0 in their first game of the Gene Cusic Classic, and then came up short after a seventh-inning rally against Clark University (Mass.) to drop their record to 1-5 overall in the young 2012 season.
Against Bridgewater, the game would remain scoreless through the third as
Emily Mahoney (Crystal Lake, Ill./South) tallied five strikeouts on 12 batters faced. But the Bears of Bridgewater State would find two runs in the fourth inning and another in the fifth to go up 3-0 on the Stars.
Back-to-back hits by
Sarah Budz (Orland Park, Ill./Providence Catholic) and Mahoney in the sixth would get the Stars in scoring position before
Andrea Pinarski (Goshen, Ind. /Concord) came in to knock a single, but Budz would get called out at home plate to end the inning and the Stars’ attempt to rally.
Pinarski and
Corinne Wimmer (Elgin, Ill./Larkin) tallied two hits apiece to lead the Stars offensively, and Mahoney completed the game with 10 strikeouts on 27 batters faced.
In the second game against Clark, the Cougars would score right away in the first before three Stars’ errors would give way to four more runs through four innings of play, and the Stars would find themselves down 0-5 all the way through six and one-half innings.
The Stars would rally in the bottom of the seventh, though, as
Marissa Gray (Elk Grove, Ill. /Conant) and
Allie Evans (Greenwood, Ind.) would start a two-out rally before Wimmer cranked a double to bring the base runners across the plate for the final scores of the game.
The Stars will look to rebound tomorrow when they face Kenyon College in a 1 PM EST game, followed by a matchup with Worcester Polytechnic Institute at 3 PM EST. Game coverage will include live stats and tweets.
