Box Score FORT MYERS, Fla. – Down 7-10 to the Illinois College Blueboys in the bottom of the ninth, the Stars put together their second of two big rallies in the game, scoring three runs to force extra innings before falling 10-11 in 10 frames. The extra-innings loss is their first of the season, giving them a 4-1 record.
Dominican would lead 3-0 through three innings while senior left-hander David Erschbock (Round Lake Beach, Ill. /Round Lake) struck out four of 11 batters faced. But then the Blueboys found some offense of their own to close the gap to 3-2, Dominican, in the fourth inning.
The Stars would then keep that lead through six frames before the Blueboys tied things up 3-3 in the seventh, and pounded out five runs in the eighth to take what seemed to be a commanding 8-3 lead going into the bottom of the eighth.
Back-to-back singles by
Time Dernulc (Dyer, Ind. /Marian Catholic) and
Richie Green (Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech) got the Stars’ offense going again, and then they took advantage of two Illinois College errors to score two runs and put pressure on the Blueboys. It was then
Chris Kemp (Oak Lawn, Ill. / Richards) who stepped to the plate to belt his first homer of the season and bring the score to 8-7, which is how the eigth would end.
Illinois College then scored two more in the top of the ninth to put the pressure back on the Stars, and the Stars delivered with three runs in the final half inning.
Lenny Cunzalo (Chicago, Ill. / St. Patrick) knocked in Dernulc on a single to third, while
Tim Varallo (Chicago, Ill. / St. Patrick) found a gap in center field to bring in Cunzalo and
Jon Basinski (Chicago Ridge, Ill. / Richards) and force an extra inning.
In the extra frame, it was a two-out, RBI single that gave the Blueboys the 11-10 lead for what would be the final score of the game.
The Stars are next in action tomorrow against Newbury College. First pitch is scheduled for 2 PM EST.
