Stars Downed by Nighthawks

Box Score FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Dominican University baseball team was not able to recover after giving up four runs in the second inning to the Nighthawks of Newbury College today, giving them their second loss of the season and bringing their record to 4-2 overall.

The Stars’ first at-bat was productive, as they loaded the bases on two singles and a walk before Lenny Cunzalo (Chicago, Ill./St. Patrick) knocked in Richie Green (Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech) and Jon Basinski (Chicago Ridge, Ill./Richards) took advantage of a Nighthawk error to score from second, giving the Stars a 2-1 advantage. But a double-play by the Nighthawks would end the inning, leaving one base runner on the field.

Then came the top of the second inning, when the Stars retired two Newbury batters before loading the bases and giving up a bases-clearing double that gave the Nighthawks a lead they would never give up.

Dominican would manage another run in the seventh, as Basinski knocked in Green with a single to left field, but it would not be enough as Newbury added another run in the ninth for a final score of 6-3.

Basinski went 3-3 on the day, tallying a double, one run scored, and an RBI. Green reached base twice via a single to left field and a walk, and then stole three bases and came across the plate for the other two Stars’ runs in the game.

The Stars now have a day off tomorrow before facing the Kenyon College Lords in an 11 AM EST contest on Thursday.
