Against Kenyon, the Stars would find themselves down 1-2 through five innings, their lone run coming off a Melissa Summaria (Algonquin, Ill./Dundee Crown) home run in the second inning after the Ladies of Kenyon jumped ahead 2-0 in the first.

But it was the sixth inning that proved to be the difference in the game, as the Stars went off for five runs in the top half of the inning. The offensive surge started after Sarah Budz (Orland Park, Ill./Providence Catholic) and Corinne Wimmer (Elgin, Ill./Larkin) reached base, and pitcher Emily Mahoney (Crystal Lake, Ill./South) brought them across the plate on a double to right field (video below).

It was then Andrea Pinarski (Goshen, Ind./Concord) to deliver the next RBI, as she crankead a double to left and brought in Mahoney. Summaria then reached, was advanced by Amanda Moran (River Grove, Ill./East Leyden), and Tayler Miller (Elkhart, Ind./Memorial) cleared the bases with a two-out double to center, giving the Stars their fourth and fifth runs of the inning.

Each team would find another run in the seventh, but it wouldn’t be enough for the Ladies as the Stars picked up their first victory in the Gene Cusic Classic.

Budz finished the game 3-4 at the plate with a double and one run scored, while Mahoney and Summaria each got two hits apiece. In addition to her three RBI’s, Mahoney also recorded five strikeouts in her peformance in the circle.
Against WPI, the Stars were down 0-1 in the bottom of the second before they came up with two runs in the inning, and another in the fifth that would seal their second victory of the day.

In the second, Pinarski and Summaria reached base on a walk and error, respectively, before Moran’s single to right brought Pinarski across the plate to even the score. Moran then swiped second base and Miller drew a walk to load the bases for Christina Lemon (Maywood, Ill./Timothy Christian) who was hit by pitch for the go-ahead RBI.

The Stars added what would be the winning run in the fifth after the speedy Wimmer got an infield hit and Pinarski delivered another RBI with a single to left. WPI then found a run in the sixth, but senior right-hander Jori Cicale (Steger, Ill./Marian Catholic) stopped the WPI offense with her fourth strikeout of the day to end the inning.

Neither team scored in their final at-bats, which left Dominican ahead 3-2 for the final score of the game.
